{"id":793598,"date":"2026-10-06T10:04:14","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T10:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/793598\/"},"modified":"2026-10-06T10:04:14","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T10:04:14","slug":"five-takeaways-from-metallicas-sphere-residency-opening-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/793598\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Takeaways From Metallica&#8217;s Sphere Residency Opening Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe sea of black T-shirts grew on the second night of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/metallica\/\" id=\"auto-tag_metallica_1\" data-tag=\"metallica\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Metallica<\/a>\u2019s sold-out Life Burns Faster residency opening weekend at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/sphere\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sphere_1\" data-tag=\"sphere\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sphere<\/a> in Las Vegas on Saturday night, as a predominantly middle-aged male crowd surrounding the Snake Pit and climbing the venue\u2019s steep seating bowl somehow appeared even larger Saturday than it had 48 hours earlier. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/music\/music-features\/metallica-sphere-residency-life-burns-faster-opening-night-1236721137\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(See night one\u2019s set list)<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe second half of the band\u2019s first \u201cNo Repeat Weekend\u201d showed no signs of losing momentum, with 22 more shows still to come through March 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMetallica introduced the concept on its M72 World Tour in 2023, asking fans to attend two shows in the same city with a day off in between and promising entirely different set lists each night. At Sphere, the stakes are considerably higher. Resale get-in prices for upcoming single-night dates started in the high $600s to low $700 range, with some Saturday dates already crossing $1,000. After 15 completely different songs and another two hours of entirely different visuals, night two felt carefully composed from beginning to end, built to reward the faithful while delivering a spectacle enormous enough to entrance the merely curious.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tNight 1 Versus Night 2\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThursday featured \u201cSad but True,\u201d \u201cNothing Else Matters,\u201d \u201cSeek &amp; Destroy,\u201d \u201cMaster of Puppets\u201d and the nearly 10-minute \u201c\u2026And Justice for All.\u201d Saturday ripped through \u201cThe Unforgiven,\u201d \u201cFor Whom the Bell Tolls,\u201d \u201cOne\u201d \u2014 also from \u2026And Justice for All \u2014 and \u201cEnter Sandman,\u201d arguably the band\u2019s biggest hit.<br \/>Saturday sweetened the heavy honey pot with deeper pulls as \u201cDevil\u2019s Dance,\u201d from Reload, returned for the first time since 2008, while Load epic \u201cThe Outlaw Torn\u201d was back after last appearing in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/20261003-IMG_1288-EMBED-2026.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"667\" width=\"1000\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tMetallica performs live at Sphere, Las Vegas, NV, on October 3, 2026<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBrett Murray<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFollowing \u201cThe Unforgiven,\u201d the band moved into \u201cOrion,\u201d dedicating the instrumental to late bassist Cliff Burton, who co-wrote it. Burton died in a tour bus crash in Sweden in 1986, making the opening Sphere weekend fall just days after the 40th anniversary of his death. Surrounded by technology capable of making almost anything larger than life, the tribute provided one of the weekend\u2019s most human moments.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDifferent Songs, Same Geometry\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe songs may be completely different, but the set-list geometry is remarkably similar. Thursday moved through drum-kit positions 1, 2 and 3. Saturday began at 3, moved to 2 and finished at 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEight of Thursday\u2019s 15 songs originated in the 1980s, making opening night the more overtly thrash-heavy history lesson. Saturday moved further into the \u201990s with \u201cFuel,\u201d \u201cDevil\u2019s Dance,\u201d \u201cKing Nothing,\u201d \u201cThe Outlaw Torn,\u201d \u201cThe Unforgiven\u201d and \u201cEnter Sandman,\u201d without abandoning early Metallica: \u201cBlackened,\u201d \u201cLeper Messiah,\u201d \u201cWelcome Home (Sanitarium),\u201d \u201cOrion,\u201d \u201cFor Whom the Bell Tolls\u201d and \u201cOne\u201d made sure of that.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tThe Best Visuals\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLongtime Metallica production designer and show director Dan Braun is one of the architects behind the band\u2019s visual world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201c72 Seasons\u201d was littered with damaged childhood memories. Old television sets towered overhead, tiny human figures appeared stranded inside their screens and an enormous broken crib sat against a toxic yellow expanse. Ordinary objects became threatening simply because of their size.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe Outlaw Torn\u201d was even significantly more immersive. A ruined city appeared in shades of arterial red, its blasted buildings stretching across Sphere\u2019s interior before the landscape began folding inward. The entire room eventually became a swirling red vortex.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2026-10oct03_Las-Vegas-Nevada_Jeff-Yeager_006-EMBED-2026.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1500\" width=\"1000\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tMetallica performs live at Sphere, Las Vegas, NV, on October 3, 2026<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJeff Yeager<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cFor Whom the Bell Tolls\u201d was an icy throwback to Metallica\u2019s Cold War rise to fame, with a bombed-out cityscape, an aircraft cockpit, soldiers looking across trenches and a sky suddenly filled with falling birds. \u201cOne\u201d continued the nightmare, moving through a blasted gray landscape before the entire screen burned red around silhouetted figures. The pairing carried its own piece of Metallica history. At the band\u2019s legendary Sept. 28, 1991, Monsters of Rock appearance at Moscow\u2019s Tushino Airfield, Metallica also played \u201cFor Whom the Bell Tolls\u201d and \u201cOne\u201d back-to-back, in that order. Thirty-five years later, the same two songs come in the same order. This time, instead of playing across a vast open field, Metallica put the battlefield around the audience.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tThe Finale: \u201cEnter Sandman\u201d\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs the opening notes of \u201cEnter Sandman\u201d arrived, a blue orb emerged inside Sphere. It hovered above the band against a nearly empty field of color, distant at first, then growing larger and larger. Blue became white, white eventually became red, and the object appeared to move closer until a sphere consumed the Sphere. <\/p>\n<p>\t\tProof of Concept\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOpening weekend proved, once again, that the two-night concept works, but the more intriguing question is what happens next. Will next Thursday be entirely different from the previous one?<br \/>How much will change across the coming dates? Does \u201cDevil\u2019s Dance\u201d remain in rotation after its long absence? Does \u201cThe Outlaw Torn\u201d become part of the Saturday blueprint or disappear again? Will Thursday continue skewing earlier while Saturday reaches deeper into the \u201990s? And with visuals this elaborate tied to individual songs, how much of this massive production can realistically rotate in and out?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMore importantly, is this a Sphere show fans can come back to again and again and still be surprised?
