Yet one real-life epic love story has proven that romance is still very much alive, kicking and \u00ad\u2014 in this case \u2014 tail wagging.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1djwt00033b6rlksx9wi1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Driven by the desire for a partner, three male African wild dogs left the safety of their pack in Zambia to embark upon a 2,563-mile odyssey fraught with danger, to find mates. Crossing crocodile-infested rivers while evading the threat of lions and humans alike, the young brothers covered a distance roughly 249 miles shy of the width of the United States in under nine months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1fi8j00083b6rd6w0hbs0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the trek finally culminated in April, the wild dogs set a record for the longest documented single land journey by any animal on the continent, rewriting our understanding of the connectivity between faraway populations of an intensely social species.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1t00g000b3b6rxikikixn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some 9,300 miles away at Montana State University, Scott Creel, a professor of conservation biology and ecology, followed the trio\u2019s journey \u2014 beamed via GPS tracking collars \u2014 on his laptop.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1t0gm000c3b6ru4jxt3t0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou check every day, and you\u2019re like, \u2018Yeah, this is extraordinary,\u2019\u201d Creel, who co-authored a <a href=\"https:\/\/esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ecy.70504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> on their journey, published last month in The Scientific Naturalist, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/pack-on-the-move.jpg\" alt=\"African wild dogs are renowned for their strong social bonds.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1tb66000e3b6rmyoqid1k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With fewer than 700 packs and under 1,700 mature individuals left globally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/fr\/species\/12436\/221299510#assessment-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a> to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), African wild dogs are classified as endangered and are proving increasingly difficult for researchers to find.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1tbnj000f3b6rz7d60ris@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Their behavior complicates the challenge; home ranges span hundreds of square miles, spacing packs out across the continent, and breeding is typically limited to a single dominant individual from each sex within each pack.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1tbnj000g3b6rge6uufc6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Eventually, the rest of the pack must make a choice: stick around and wait for the chance to become the alpha male or female, potentially when one of the head pair dies, or break from the group in search of a mate to start a new family in a process known as dispersal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1tbnj000h3b6rbcyo9xwx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On August 6, 2025, the trio of three-year-old males, born and raised among the Mayukuyuku pack in western Zambia\u2019s Kafue National Park, chose option two.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1tbnj000i3b6r6xql1qnd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf there\u2019s no opportunities amongst the packs that are their immediate neighbors, they just sort of pick a direction and go,\u201d explained Creel.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1u4ig000o3b6r02ooe9iy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThen they\u2019re just rolling with the punches.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/kwd2060.JPG\" alt=\"Wild dogs often leave their natal pack in search of a mate once they reach maturity, sometimes alone but regularly in same-sex groups.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4000\" width=\"6016\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1tq91000k3b6r0k7yi0g8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The brothers were three of more than 500 African wild dogs from over 50 packs that Creel, in collaboration with the Zambian Carnivore Programme, spent the past 16 years studying via satellite GPS radio collars that track the animals\u2019 movements across their entire life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1ug3n000q3b6rori4k82u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Their departure did not come as a shock. Three of 19 pups to survive to adulthood, the males\u2019 chances of breeding were low in a large pack and four of their agemate sisters had dispersed two weeks prior.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1ug3n000r3b6rl3y74oql@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet the nature and scale of the subsequent journey was unprecedented. Within a month, the males had ventured hundreds of miles toward the country\u2019s urban center, swiftly doubling back on each occasion they reached the outskirts of major cities like Kabwe.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1ug3n000s3b6r3usnzegz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When leaving the national parks and other protected areas to enter regions with a higher human footprint, the dogs\u2019 movement patterns revealed a dramatic shift that Creel hypothesizes as \u201ctravel mode.\u201d A moderate balance of moving, resting, hunting was replaced by an accelerated linear approach adopted to speed around potential danger, a behavior which Creel believes evolved from responses to run-ins with lions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1ug3n000t3b6rw9ffzklo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The males reunited with their sisters \u2014 by then down to three \u2014 midway through September, almost 750 miles from their starting point in the northerly Copperbelt Province, a testament to the dogs\u2019 ability to locate each other via scent.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1ug3n000u3b6rye6dyhr1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After a day with their siblings, the trio spent the next six months on a winding route westward before reaching a forested region in eastern Zambia Luangwa Valley, home to one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1002\/ecy.70504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">largest<\/a> African wild dog populations on the continent, where they remained. Creel believes it is likely the dogs connected with females, though the difficulty of accessing the highly remote area means research teams have been unable to conclusively verify the union.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1ug3n000v3b6rcjsjtd9a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet the long-range treks made by the Mayukuyuku siblings and other tracked wild dogs is ample cause for conservationists to be excited. Movements of dispersed, collared individuals have connected all of Zambia\u2019s resident wild dog populations, spanning seven national parks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1ug3n000w3b6rzhofb5lz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What\u2019s more, there are examples of the species\u2019 connectivity extending to the broader sub-Saharan region. The sisters crossed into Mozambique and since then, another group of Mayukuyuku dispersers crossed north into the Democratic Republic of Congo, while a group from a different pack headed east into Malawi.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1ug3n000x3b6rpmumfwvv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is a \u201cmind-boggling\u201d level of linkage that Creel \u201cwould not have dreamed of\u201d still enduring today when he began studying the dogs, and a source of optimism that their continued ability to make new connections \u2014 despite the distances and human populations in between \u2014 means there is hope for their dwindling numbers to rise naturally.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1ug3n000y3b6r3rwezhic@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey\u2019ll only recover if they\u2019re connected,\u201d said Creel.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/kwd2062.JPG\" alt=\"A disperser from the Mayukuyuku pack.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2848\" width=\"4288\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1x58j00123b6r1ft38x37@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That is Creel\u2019s \u201cglass half full\u201d takeaway from the long-distance wild dog journeys. The other side of the story is written in blood.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1x5nd00133b6rrtrglamm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A few weeks after reuniting with the brothers, one of the three surviving Mayukuyuku females was caught in a wire snare while traversing through a forest. Anchored to trees, the noose is designed to catch an animal and then tighten, often inflicting a \u201chorror show\u201d of injuries in the process as the abrasive wire bites into flesh as deep as three inches, Creel explained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1x5nd00143b6r99uue3pp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The snares are not intended to catch African wild dogs, but are set by bushmeat poachers in pursuit of large herbivores like wildebeest or zebra. Even when wild dogs and lions manage to bite their way free, many still succumb to their wounds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1x5nd00153b6rknc74iy7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou set it, and then whoever walks through the gap in the bushes next is who dies,\u201d Creel said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1x5nd00163b6r8fn8clf9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you see the damage that they do, it\u2019s very hard not to be engaged,\u201d he added. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine how painful it is.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/gettyimages-2294508730.jpg\" alt=\"Wire snares, pictured being removed in Kenya's Rukinga Wildlife Sanctuary, can inflict lethal damage on wildlife.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3333\" width=\"5000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1x5nd00173b6rrrmfwenh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With wild dogs unable to recognize wire snares (some dogs have been snared as often as four times) and reluctant to leave behind fallen packmates, tracking data showed the two other Mayukuyuku sisters returning to their mortally wounded sibling before one of the pair stopped moving for good. A GPS collar, cut off by a knife, was later found at the site, leading researchers to conclude that she, too, had died in a snare. With the remaining sister not wearing a collar, her fate is unknown.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1x5nd00183b6rd9shz8wc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is an all too familiar tragedy for Creel. When he started working in Tanzania almost four decades ago, he would head out with his wife and remove as many as 500 snares in a matter of days. He believes the issue has intensified since then, and fears the ramifications if solutions aren\u2019t found to a \u201ccomplicated problem.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1x5ne00193b6rlnlwvlam@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf we don\u2019t get on top of that, there\u2019ll be nothing left to save,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1x5ne001a3b6rdebp1kz4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPeople don\u2019t snare because it\u2019s a fun hobby. They do it because they\u2019re poor people living at the end of a long dirt road without a lot of options. So I\u2019m not talking just about law enforcement. I\u2019m also talking about finding ways to make it unnecessary.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv1x5ne001b3b6rg5vc5s9q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The greatest ramification of snares for wild dogs is not the direct threat to them, but to their prey. The decline of large herbivore populations across sub-Saharan Africa due to bushmeat poaching is forcing the canines to work harder and roam farther in search of food, a 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2414772122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research<\/a> paper co-authored by Creel found, in turn increasing their risk of becoming ensnared.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv20nse001l3b6rtren3pct@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is sobering reality check for anyone romanticizing the wild dogs\u2019 journey like it\u2019s a Disney movie. Yet Creel does not dismiss people who anthropomorphize these animals; he remains deeply invested in their survival.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuv20oke001m3b6rluz054tr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s pretty hard not to have some empathy for what a difficult task these animals face in the world as we\u2019ve made it,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s 8.3 billion of us, but we\u2019re sharing the world with almost 8 million other species.
