Rooted in prog sludge, influences of dissonant mathcore also seep through a raw and abrasive sound, but the line between what Sea Sleeper intend and what’s genuinely rough around the edges can be hard to delineate. If early Mastodon and Gojira had listened to a load of Gorguts and The Dillinger Escape Plan early on and pursued that sort of sound, you’ve got an idea of what Burden of Antlers is going for, but sometimes you get the sense that what you hear and what the band intended might be different things.

Certainly, “Machines of the Bombing Runs” opens the record with a statement as dissonant chords and vituperative vocals follow rhythms that accelerate and slow on a dime. A more atmospheric passage shows that it’s not all intensity for Sea Sleeper. Still, the track highlights some problems that will plague the record throughout. Despite their Bandcamp bio stating that the band ‘strive to prove heavy is more than just volume’, they mastered Burden of Antlers to be louder than World War II. Much of the muddiness of the production at large can be attributed to this excessive volume, as can some of the weaknesses of the vocals, which combine gnashing screams with a strained clean timbre that makes the vocalist sound like He-Man has foiled his schemes again. The closest comparison in the metal world may well be the unique timbre of SikTh’s Mikee Goodman.

What follows largely veers between early Mastodon sludge and mathcore. Tracks like “Manifestor” and “They’ll Miss You” centre Kelliher/Hinds style riffing, while “Abysmal Trench” leans more into the erratic mathcore sense with throaty screams. “Lunar Degenerates” starts out more softly before becoming mired in thick riffs laden with pinch harmonics. Nevertheless, the larger identity of many of these tracks is slippery, somewhat lost in a soup of raw riffing that lacks a sense of compositional flow. A few later tracks buck this trend, with “Coma” coming across as the most complete track, organising thunderous riffs, scattered tremolo passages, stop/start sections, and moments of frantic blast beating. The whole track begins to fall apart (by design rather than accident) under the weight of dissonance—this is one of the moments where you can confidently say that Sea Sleeper are trying to sound wonky as hell. At other times, it’s all too haphazard to be deliberate.

Despite an admittedly tight, for the most part, rhythm section, Burden of Antlers’ further issue is how close the whole endeavour sounds to total collapse. While an abrasive sound is clearly intentional, I doubt the clearly out-of-tune guitar that comes and goes was a choice; I spent more time than I care to admit trying to work out whether Sea Sleeper might be a microtonal band—they’re not. Heavy sections become quagmired in a soup of noise, and at times the clean vocals are difficult to listen to—I’ve been a bit hard on the vocals, but they’re not inherently bad, more ill-served by the mix and rough around the edges. Compositionally, Sea Sleeper hit upon some cool ideas, even if they don’t feel fully formed. But Burden of Antlers is often too raw: it’s the difference between liking your steak rare and being handed a knife as you’re let into the feed lot.

Tight riffing and angular composition unfortunately aren’t enough to save Burden of Antlers from a lack of compositional flow, raw production, and vocals that make you want to draw upon the power of Greyskull to defeat them. It’s a shame because Sea Sleeper show promise throughout the record but it’s marred by such basic failures as making sure the guitars are in tune. Still, there’s something to work with here, and with some concerted effort to refine those hard edges, the burden of listening to Sea Sleeper could soon be far diminished.

Recommended tracks: Coma, They’ll Miss You
You may also like: Ashbreather, Monolith, Stone Healer
Final verdict: 5/10

Related links: Bandcamp | Facebook | Instagram

Label: independent

Sea Sleeper is:
– Nick Kessler (bass, vocals)
– Shane Cooley (drums)
– Jess Cooley (guitar, vocals)
– Joel Henigson (guitars)

Related

No artist credited.
