All the people that make it possible to have these Championships in Slovenia. So I think it’s just beautiful to finish off this event for all of us,” he said afterwards.

            You may like

“I didn’t have my radio. It went off in probably in the first kilometre of the of the race, so I was completely lost, [I] just did it on my feelings. But I definitely just put everything on the road, and luckily it was enough. So I’m really happy.”

The men’s Elite TT at this year’s UEC European Road Championships marked the end of six days of racing, but the race lacked some of the discipline’s biggest names, with World Champion Remco Evenepoel and the other medalists from the Montreal Worlds, Filippo Ganna and Paul Seixas, both absent.

The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!

Indeed, the highest-placed World Championships rider taking the start was Jakob Söderqvist, the Swedish rider, the final rider down the start ramp. There were some big names racing Šenčur though, with Stefan Küng, Kasper Asgreen, Primož Roglič and the in-form Bruno Amirail all among the late starters.

The course was identical to the other time trial races this week, and the same 22km circuit which closed all the road races. Featuring the climb to Možjanca, it’s 2km averaging more than 10% gradient, and set to define the course.

Only 44 riders started Wednesday’s race, with Kosovan rider Albion Kastrati riding a road bike, the first and hitting the opening time check at the top of the climb, 8km into the course, in 16:54, though the second starter, Samet Bulut (Türkiye), was already closing in.

While Kastrati reached the 16.3km time check, and even the finish, first, behind him Portugal’s first rider, Tiago Antunes had hit the top of the climb more than three minutes faster, his ride heralding a series of new best times. The fastest of those went to local hero Roglič, the former Olympic champion, stopping the clock in 13:10, a time no one was able to beat.

Results

Swipe to scroll horizontally

Position

Rider (Country) Team

Time Gap

1

Primož Roglič (Slo) Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe

28:16:061

2

Bruno Armirail (Fra) Visma-Lease a Bike

0:07,129

3

Maxime Decomble (Fra) Groupama-FDJ United

0:28,969

4

Ilan Van Wilder (Bel) Soudal-QuickStep

0:33,036

5

Stefan Küng (Swi) Tudor Pro Cycling

0:35,809

6

Kasper Asgreen (Den) EF Education-EasyPost

0:45,459

7

Marco Frigo (Ita) NSN Cycling Team

0:55,909

8

Jakob Söderqvist (Swe) Lidl-Trek

0:56,279

9

Callum Thornley (GBr) Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe

0:56,709

10

Iván Romeo (Spa) Movistar Team

0:57,999

11

Aleksandr Vlasov (Rus) Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe

0:58,779

12

Mikkel Bjerg (Den) UAE Team Emirates-XRG

0:59,239

13

Felix Großschartner (Aut) UAE Team Emirates-XRG

1:02,129

14

Mauro Schmid (Swi) Jayco-AlUla

1:07,549

15

Nelson Oliveira (Por) Movistar Team

1:07,989

16

Mattia Cattaneo (Ita) Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe

1:11,569

17

Sander De Pestel (Bel) Decathlon CMA CGM

1:13,030

18

Jan Tratnik (Slo) Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe

1:23,709

19

Tiago Antunes (Por) Efapel Cycling

1:27,953

20

Marco Brenner (Ger) Tudor Pro Cycling

1:28,009

21

Alex Kirsch (Lux) Cofidis

1:37,099

22

Miguel Heidemann (Ger) Rembe | Rad-Net

1:37,649

23

Sjoerd Bax (Ned) Pinarello-Q36.5

1:39,599

24

Michał Kwiatkowski (Pol) Ineos Grenadiers

1:47,649

25

Mathieu Kockelmann (Lux) Lotto-Intermarché

2:00,169

26

Axel Källberg (Fin) Lucky Sport Cycling Team

2:39,239

27

János Pelikán (Hun) Team United Shipping

2:51,489

28

Aivaras Mikutis (Ltu) Tudor Pro Cycling

2:52,009

29

Dávid Kaško (Svk) Dukla Banska Bystrica

3:01,839

30

Burak Abay (Tur) Konya Büyükşehi̇r Beledi̇ye Spor

3:13,459

Subscribe to Cyclingnews for comprehensive race coverage of the UCI Gravel World Championships, alongside the final Monument of the season, Il Lombardia.
