He was always looking at his persona at a distance, and that wasn’t helped by everyone in Seattle being a little bit uncomfortable with Pearl Jam’s success to begin with.

For one thing, Vedder was one of the few true grunge icons who didn’t come directly from Seattle. Mother Love Bone were the patron saints of the scene around that time, and Vedder would have done anything that he could to make himself fit into that kind of scene, but it was bound to be uncomfortable knowing he was stepping into the shoes of someone that could never truly be filled.

Andy Wood was one of a kind, and while Pearl Jam were their own unique entity, there was still a lot for him to learn when he first came up. He was lucky enough to have someone like Chris Cornell showing him the ropes when he worked with Temple of the Dog, but given Vedder’s gravelly voice and Mike McCready’s ripping leads, it was a lot easier for people to look at them as the more mainstream version of what the Seattle sound could be.

And no one seemed to have a bigger mouth about it than Kurt Cobain. Nirvana were already having their own struggles with becoming famous out of nowhere, but Cobain was much more interested in calling out people whom he thought weren’t authentic enough. He had a lot of love for the uncommercial sounds of people like Melvins and Mudhoney, but Vedder always had some trepidation when talking about Cobain’s legacy, knowing that the Nirvana leader never liked his band.

But for all of the trash talk that would go on in interviews, Vedder had nothing but respect for Cobain, even after he passed away. He always felt like he needed to remind everyone what someone like Cobain meant to so many people, and while he did everything he could to keep his distance where he could, there were countless times when he could feel the spirit of Cobain in the subtle moments of his career.

Cobain might not have liked the idea of playing massive stadiums the same way Pearl Jam continue to do, but Vedder felt that there were moments when his friends were jamming where he felt like Cobain belonged, saying, “[His memory] usually comes up [when I’m] around a campfire with an acoustic guitar. I used to remember thinking, ‘He would have liked this.’” And given what Cobain was doing later in his life, that’s not that far off.

Further reading: From The Vault

MTV Unplugged might be overexplained these days as being one of the final major statements from him, but even if the more psychological members of the press like to claim that Cobain was playing at his own unofficial memorial service, the idea of him making more downtempo songs and not focusing on the mainstream rock stuff as much was the kind of subtle way for him to find his way back into everyone’s good graces all over again.

We’ll never know what Cobain and Vedder would have done if they did have that legendary jam session, but it wasn’t just about them playing music together. It was about two people going through some of the hardest parts of their lives and showing the world that, after all this time, they were still musical comrades who would look out for each other if the time called for it.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

Credit: Far Out / Eddie Vedder / Alamy Thu 8 October 2026 0:00, UK Eddie Vedder didn’t really…

[28
32677,69735,96,6794,6795,128,6796,33708,56,54,55
post-795610","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1990s","tag-eddie-vedder","tag-entertainment","tag-grunge","tag-kurt-cobain","tag-music","tag-nirvana","tag-pearl-jam","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
