<\/p>\nOn Tuesday (7 October), the artist Jens Galschi\u00f8t unveiled The Orange Plague, a 2.6m-tall sculpture depicting US President Donald Trump nude and perched atop the shoulders of a frail man, inside the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, France. Covered in 23-carat gold leaf, the Trump figure holds tiny scales of justice in one hand and a golf club in the other. A golf-ball-sized globe sits at the feet of the smaller, frail man below him, who is rendered in bronze.<\/p>\n
The sculpture was installed on a plinth labelled with the work\u2019s title and a caption that reads: \u201cI am sitting on the back of a man. He is sinking under my burden. I will do anything to help him. Except stepping down from his back.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the artist, the work was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen\u2019s The Emperor\u2019s New Clothes, a fairy tale in which an emperor is convinced to buy \u201cinvisible\u201d clothing that is in fact non-existent. While people applaud the naked king, \u201ca little boy says, \u2018He has no clothes on,\u2019 and then everyone begins to laugh at him\u201d, Galschi\u00f8t tells The Art Newspaper. He adds that when he unveiled The Golden Plague, the sculpture was also met with laughter and applause.<\/p>\n

The sculpture is the centrepiece of a three-day exhibition hosted by Per Clausen, a Danish member of the European Parliament (MEP). All visitors receive a 3D-printed miniature of the sculpture to take home. Galschi\u00f8t says he printed around 20,000 sculptures that he distributed not only to visitors but also to staff throughout the European Parliament. Galschi\u00f8t has also made the design files free<\/a> for anyone who wants to print their own.<\/p>\n Galschi\u00f8t was inspired to distribute the miniatures by the Democracy Movement in Hong Kong, which 3D-scanned and printed hundreds of miniature versions of his 1997 sculpture The Pillar of Shame<\/a>, which commemorates human rights violations including the Tiananmen Square massacre. These miniature pillars appeared across Hong Kong after the original sculpture was seized and disassembled<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cNormally I attack systems, but in this case, I will attack Trump personally,\u201d Galschi\u00f8t says. His rendering was inspired by the president\u2019s extensive gilding of the White House\u2019s oval office and other properties he controls. \u201cNow we put the gold on him,\u201d the artist says, adding that the resulting image is \u201ceven more ridiculous than before\u201d. \u201cTrump is shining so much that nobody can see other people.\u201d<\/p>\n Jens Galschi\u00f8t’s The Orange Plague on display at the European Parliament building in Strasbourg Courtesy Jens Galschi\u00f8t<\/p>\n The Orange Plague was previously displayed at the \u201chands off Greenland\u201d demonstrations in Copenhagen earlier this year and the CopP30 UN Climate Summit<\/a> in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil last year. After the present installation in Strasbourg, Galschi\u00f8t plans to exhibit The Orange Plague again at the Cop31 UN Climate Conference next month Antalya, T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n \u201cNations as well as NGOs are afraid to openly raise the subject [of] how to deal with Trump and his policies, fearing tariffs, fund-cuts, deportations or the like,\u201d Galschi\u00f8t wrote on his website<\/a>. \u201cAs an independent art workshop we are not restricted by such bonds.
