We spoke to Superdrug senior pharmacy manager Tahera Dewji to find out how you can bypass the GP queue using the NHS Pharmacy First Service.

Discover how a simple, free walk-in consultation in a private room can unlock prescription-strength treatments and expert clinical care right on your high street.

Q.I had shingles a few years back, and since then, it reoccurs semi-regularly. What can I do to treat and reduce the symptoms? Rochelle, 68, from Hertfordshire

A . If you do get shingles go into your local Superdrug pharmacy and speak to the pharmacist. They will be able to assess your symptoms and give you tailored advice on treatment options.

If you’ve had shingles previously, you may experience the uncomfortable nerve pain it can leave behind. This is known as postherpetic neuralgia, and it can cause burning, shooting, or aching pain, sensitivity, or itching in the area where you previously had the rash. For some people, these symptoms can continue for months or even longer after the rash has cleared.

If you have active shingles, you may be suitable to use the NHS Pharmacy First Service to access a Superdrug pharmacist who can assess your symptoms, discuss suitable treatments and, where appropriate, supply prescription-strength medication directly.

Superdrug senior pharmacy manager Tahera Dewji is answering your questions to support good winter health(Image: Tim Anderson)

When you are suffering from shingles, ordinary painkillers don’t always provide sufficient relief. Your pharmacist can explain the options available and advise whether you need to see another healthcare professional for further assessment or treatment.

There are also some simple everyday steps you can take to make the affected area more comfortable. Try to opt for loose, soft clothing to avoid touching or covering your rash, as your skin may be extra sensitive. For further relief from the pain, use a cold compress such as a cold towel or an ice block wrapped in a towel and apply it to your rash. Be sure to keep your rash clean and dry to prevent infection too.

If you notice any new symptoms that make you think shingles could be present, don’t ignore them. Shingles can start with pain, tingling, burning, itching, or unusual sensitivity in one particular area, sometimes before a rash appears. If shingles is present, a red, blotchy rash can develop, consisting of clusters of fluid-filled blisters. Shingles usually affects one side of the body and can be particularly painful.

As with all viruses, you’re more likely to get them if your immune system is lower, so try to keep yourself well by managing stress and looking after your overall health. This includes eating a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg, as well as taking regular exercise.

If you do develop shingles, it’s important to seek advice early from a healthcare professional, ideally within 72 hours of the rash appearing, as some treatments may help reduce the severity and duration of symptoms.

Find out how your local Superdrug Pharmacy can help today.

This service is subject to consultation with a Superdrug pharmacist.
