{"id":796614,"date":"2026-10-09T03:28:29","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T03:28:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/796614\/"},"modified":"2026-10-09T03:28:29","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T03:28:29","slug":"two-latvian-men-arrested-inside-uk-military-base-after-breach-military-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/796614\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Latvian men arrested inside UK military base after breach | Military News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Police say nothing so far suggests the incident at RAF Molesworth is linked \u200bto events surrounding RAF Fairford last month.<\/p>\n<p>Published On 8 Oct 20268 Oct 2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Two Latvian men have been arrested inside a military base in southeast England that houses United States and NATO intelligence hubs after the perimeter fence was breached, police have said.<\/p>\n<p>The arrests come amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/9\/28\/terror-incident-near-raf-base-used-for-iran-war-what-we-know\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heightened concerns<\/a> about security at military bases in the United Kingdom after a separate incident last month.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Counterterrorism police said on Thursday that the two men, aged 36 and 32, were arrested at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Molesworth base in Cambridgeshire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">They are being held on suspicion of trespass and of entering a prohibited place \u201cfor a purpose prejudicial to the UK\u201d, said police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A security patrol had spotted an abandoned vehicle near the base late on Wednesday night. Police found a \u201csmall breach\u201d in the perimeter fence before locating and arresting the men in the early hours of Thursday, they said.<\/p>\n<p>The men were taken to a police station in Cambridgeshire where they are still in custody. Both are Latvian nationals residing in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The arrests come after a major incident at RAF Fairford in western England on September 27 that led to the arrest of seven men, all in their 20s, who have since been released on bail. One is a dual UK-Iranian national.<\/p>\n<p>No connection to RAF Fairford<\/p>\n<p>Due to the nature of the incident, UK counterterrorism police are leading the investigation into the security breach, police said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very aware of the recent heightened interest and concern around military sites,\u201d said Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut at this stage there is nothing to suggest this incident is connected to the events at RAF Fairford,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Flanagan said that the investigation at RAF Molesworth is at an early stage but added that enquiries would home in on \u201cany potential motivation as to why the men were present at the site\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">RAF Molesworth, formerly a World War II airbase, is now a non-flying facility managed by the United States Air Force.<\/p>\n<p>US intelligence has based its operation centres for Europe and Africa at the base near Huntingdon.
