And this time, there were a few issues to iron out. Because while the preceding album was ubiquitously loved and ready to place the band as the next psychedelic saviours, it wasn’t the democratic recording process some of them had hoped for.

It was Paul McCartney’s baby, that much was for sure and while he may feel like the record was the perfect distillation of their experimental voice, the rest of the band had more to say. While John Lennon was of course one of those members, as he always had been, another was George Harrison, the relatively quiet Beatle who by ‘67 was developing the structures of his own songwriting ideas.

He remembered, “You have success with something that might have seemed like a far-out idea, people had said, ‘Wow, this is great’, and so when we’d come back again, George [Martin] would be really quite keen to try, ‘What other ideas have you got?’”

It turned out that there were plenty of similar ilk, if not more experimental. There was, of course, ‘I Am The Walrus’, which saw Lennon go full left field with his narrative ideas, while ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ proved how psychedelia could sound like pop. Then there was Harrison’s ‘Blue Jay Way’, warped in kaleidoscopic sounds that defiantly proved the band, and that meant all of them, had crossed the breach into their new world.

“It was like we were in another phase of our career. You know we’d done all the live stuff, and that was marvellous, now we were into being more artists. We got more freedom to be artists,” McCartney remembered.

Further reading: From The Vault

Magical Mystery Tour might not get the recognition of its predecessor, nor the records like Abbey Road or The White Album that came after. In fact, it’s often the overlooked one in the collection. But it was as experimental as anything they had ever done, while still managing to pull on all the pop sensibilities that made them so universally loved.

It was a perfect example of how they had mastered the art of both worlds, bringing experimentalism and melody into view together. But more importantly, it made the pursuit of psychedelia a more democratic process, where all of the songwriters could contribute and prove that while there were leaders, the destination the band were heading was chosen by them all unanimously.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE The Far Out Beatles Newsletter

All the latest stories about The Beatles from the independent voice of culture.
Straight to your inbox.

Credit: Far Out / Alamy Thu 8 October 2026 16:30, UK After The Beatles released Sgt Pepper’s Lonely…

[28
19405,189535,177457,96,26940,25396,49293,128,6470,62515,10447,56,54,55
post-796648","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1960s","tag-189535","tag-british-rock","tag-entertainment","tag-george-harrison","tag-john-lennon","tag-magical-mystery-tour","tag-music","tag-paul-mccartney","tag-psychedelic-rock","tag-the-beatles","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
