When Pearl Jam<\/a> entered the studio in the spring of 1993 to start recording the follow-up to 1991\u2019s Ten, the pressure was high. <\/p>\n

Like their contemporaries in the Seattle grunge scene, Pearl Jam had been quite suddenly vaulted to the forefront of pop culture. Even worse, they were often dismissively placed in a secondary role to Nirvana, whose lead singer Kurt Cobain took quite a bit of joy in bashing the band that he saw as a trend-chasing former hair metal act. <\/p>\n

Looking to reiterate their aggressive bona fides, Ten<\/a> so immediately radio-friendly. Although they still had mainstream-friendly material, including acoustic numbers like \u2018Daughter\u2019 and \u2018Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town\u2019, the band were growing wearier of chasing hit singles, so much so that they rejected \u2018Better Man\u2019 for inclusion on the album when O\u2019Brien opined that it could be a chart success.<\/p>\n

Most bands would have welcomed a producer identifying an obvious hit, but Vedder heard it as a warning that if they continued to tread this path, they would find themselves squarely in the middle of the road and become sitting ducks for oncoming traffic. <\/p>\n

Success had already arrived too quickly, and every radio-friendly chorus threatened to drag the group further into the machinery they were trying to resist. \u2018Better Man\u2019 had been sitting with him since his teenage years, yet the suggestion that it might become another smash was enough to make him retreat from it. It eventually hit the airwaves on Vitalogy, but Vedder and his band were making it clear that they weren\u2019t going to become an MTV mechanism. <\/p>\n

The more radical sound that the band were aiming for was immediately audible on Vs.\u2018s opening track \u2018Go\u2019, during which Mike McCready can be heard slamming his guitar into the floor. O\u2019Brien favoured this intimate approach, with studio chatter being heard throughout the album, including on the intro to \u2018Daughter\u2019. O\u2019Brien also captured another moment of frustration on tape, this time at the end of \u2018Rearviewmirror\u2019, the high-energy track that appears on side two of the LP.<\/p>\n

According to Kim Neely\u2019s Pearl Jam biography Five Against One, drummer Dave Abbruzzese was put under enormous pressure, both by the band and by O\u2019Brien, during the recording of Vs. Abbruzzese entered into a volatile position, with two previous drummers having come and gone in just two years. Looking to capture the perfect take, O\u2019Brien had Abbruzzese record the drum part over and over, to the point where Abbruzzese saw his frustration boil over. <\/p>\n

Pushing your artists close to the edge is part of what a good producer can do. There is danger near the edge, and danger breeds a sense of rock and roll urgency that is entirely vital to some albums, and certainly this one. But, it would seem, he went a step too far during this session. At the end of \u2018Rearviewmirror\u2019, the clattering of Abbruzzese\u2019s drumsticks can be heard as he throws them across the room.<\/p>\n

The outburst somehow suited \u2018Rearviewmirror\u2019\u2019, with the song already built around escape, with Vedder singing about finally putting distance between himself and a damaging past as the band gathered speed behind him. Abbruzzese\u2019s drumming gave that flight its urgency, pushing harder until the final section sounded close to collapse<\/p>\n

This apparently wasn\u2019t the end of it either. The band were recording at a picturesque hillside studio called The Site in Nicasio, California, but the calming setting didn\u2019t stop Abbruzzese from punching a hole in his snare drum and throwing it over the side of one of the studio\u2019s cliffs, according to Neely. Abbruzzese never truly got comfortable in Pearl Jam<\/a>, and although he contributed to two of the band\u2019s best-loved albums, Abbruzzese would get the boot from the group less than a year after the release of Vs.<\/p>\n
