The challenges facing Oxfordshire’s rivers and streams are being discussed at a day-long event.

West Oxfordshire District Council’s Waterways Day 2026 is aimed at bringing together experts, organisations and communities involved in all aspects of managing water courses.

A series of talks and drop-in sessions at the Corn Exchange in Witney will cover issues including water pollution, development, flooding, agriculture and nature recovery.

Alistair Wray, executive member for environment said it was a chance to “hear directly” from the those working on these issues surrounding the area’s waterways.

“West Oxfordshire’s waterways are hugely important to our communities, our environment and the future well-being of the district.

“There are many interconnected challenges facing them, from pollution and the impact of development to flooding, agriculture and the need to restore nature,” he added.

Campaigners have recently raised issues about a “toxic cocktail” of pollution in the county’s rivers, while Witney was among the areas which suffered from flooding in November 2024 in the aftermath of Storm Bert.

Each session will feature expert speakers followed by a panel Q&A, giving residents the chance put their own questions.

Alongside the talks, visitors can drop into the Gallery at the Corn Exchange between 10:00 and 17:00 BST on Friday 9th October, where organisations working on local waterways will have stalls and information available.

The challenges facing Oxfordshire’s rivers and streams are being discussed at a day-long event.
