The WBA ordered its two welterweight champions to meet on September 22, giving their camps until October 22 to negotiate. If talks fail, the championship committee may order a purse bid with the WBA president\u2019s approval. The deadline does not automatically trigger a stripping.<\/p>\n
Teofimo\u2019s interest in Ryan Garcia creates the complication. The Ring reported that he was pursuing that bigger fight for the first half of 2027 before the Catterall order intervened. Taking Catterall first would introduce the possibility of a defeat before that payday, which helps explain why an attractive Cardiff platform alone might not get the bout made.<\/p>\n
Catterall\u2019s confidence adds another layer. He wants the opportunity to beat Teofimo himself, rather than watch the title become available without that fight.<\/p>\n
Cardiff remains a proposal. The more immediate test comes on October 22, when the negotiation period ends, and the WBA must decide how to proceed if the camps have no agreement.<\/p>\n
