{"id":798007,"date":"2026-10-10T11:00:10","date_gmt":"2026-10-10T11:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/798007\/"},"modified":"2026-10-10T11:00:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-10T11:00:10","slug":"nikon-microscopic-video-competition-winner-disqualified-for-using-generative-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/798007\/","title":{"rendered":"Nikon microscopic video competition winner disqualified for using generative AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Nikon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikonsmallworld.com\/news\/nikon-small-world-in-motion-video-statement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> the video that originally won first place in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/997345\/the-winners-of-nikons-microscopic-video-competition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Small World in Motion contest<\/a> \u201cdid not comply with the competition rules regarding generative AI.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cr86z33pdy9vo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a> reports that the original first place video from Dr. Ning Xu claimed to show \u201ctiny, hair-like structures called cilia moving in the airway of a child with the respiratory condition PCD.\u201d Nikon said last week that it was <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2026\/10\/01\/nikon-re-reviewing-winner-of-small-world-in-motion-contest-after-ai-accusation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reviewing the video<\/a> following skepticism online about its authenticity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:ugcPost:7506310017814401024\/?dashCommentUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afsd_comment%3A%287508739768218980352%2Curn%3Ali%3AugcPost%3A7506310017814401024%29\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a comment on LinkedIn<\/a>, Dr. Xu admitted to using AI for the video: \u201cAn unsupervised neural-network method was subsequently used for AI-assisted post-processing to distinguish and visualize features in the reconstructed grayscale images from the super-resolution optical imaging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Dr. Xu\u2019s video has now been disqualified and appears to have been removed from Nikon\u2019s website. A video from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikonsmallworld.com\/galleries\/2026-small-world-in-motion-competition\/a-tiny-roundworm-and-a-single-celled-dileptus-explore-their-microscopic-world\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nguyen Nam Nhat<\/a> now holds first place, according to the contest\u2019s updated rankings.
