A man who lost his husband to cancer has described a charity as his “anchor”, as work begins on a purpose-built centre for people affected by the disease.<\/p>\n

As it celebrates 30 years operating, Maggie’s announced on Thursday it had started work on its new facility at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, due to open in early 2028.<\/p>\n

Roland Sore, 62, has been supported by the charity for five years after his partner Andrew was diagnosed with cancer, which spread to his lungs and became incurable.<\/p>\n

Talking about the time after Andrew’s death, Sore said: “I was numb some days, but I was just able to chat to them and they were listening to me… and I could just be myself and I felt safe when I went there.”<\/p>\n

The campus is home to Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the planned Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Maggie’s Cambridge offers free support for individuals affected by cancer, including their families and friends.<\/p>\n

It had been operating from an interim centre close to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, on Puddicombe Way, since 2012. <\/p>\n
