Elton John<\/a> has never stopped trying to break new ground whenever he writes a song. <\/p>\n Even though he has reinvented the wheel more than a few times throughout his career, the thing that keeps him coming back is realising that there are many songs that have yet to be written with Bernie Taupin by his side. They were both in the business for life, and they would do anything they could to make sure that they had the right kind of material to show people a different side of themselves on every single record.<\/p>\n But the reason why they work so well actually comes from the fact that they are on two opposite sides of the spectrum in lots of ways. John was always going to be a natural ham whenever he went out onstage, but even if Taupin kept to himself most of the time and only ever got onstage on the rare occasion, he was willing to do what he could to bring John the kind of tunes that he could turn into heartwrenching anthems.<\/p>\n No one would have known that a tune like \u2018Your Song<\/a>\u2019 was going to become one of the biggest things in the world, but John didn\u2019t want to worry about how the sales went whenever he made a record. He just wanted to make music that he felt resonated with someone beyond just the traditional pop fodder, and while he and Taupin have seen both the highs and lows of what this industry has to offer, they will still have that same connection that Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy talked about.<\/p>\n They were looking to make some of the greatest material of their career every time they worked together, but no one really expected them to be pumping out great tunes this late into the game. No one can keep up that track record for so long, but when working with Brandi Carlile on Who Believes in Angels, John knew he needed to step up his game standing next to a soon-to-be legend.<\/p>\n Carlile was writing songs that he wished he had the chance to write, like \u2018The Joke\u2019,<\/a> and since she was making tunes like \u2018You Without Me\u2019, there was no excuse for him to phone it in. He needed to bring the same amount of power to his songs as he did to his work with Leon Russell, and when \u2018When This Old World is Done With Me\u2019 came across his piano bench for the first time, he couldn\u2019t help but get a bit emotional.<\/p>\n It\u2019s no secret that legends won\u2019t be around forever, but John knew that this would have been the kind of song that detailed how he would want to be remembered when he passed, and that kind of weight was almost too great for him, saying<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019m writing the verse, and I thought it\u2019s really lovely. Then I get to the chorus and realise it\u2019s about my death, my demise. As a 76 year old man and having children, mortality, you think about how long [you\u2019ve] got. By the time I started singing it, I lost it for 45 minutes. It was a very heavy moment for me.\u201d<\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/p>\n Then again, John has never been a stranger to talking about that day when every artist reaches that great gig in the sky. There were already songs like \u2018Funeral for a Friend\u2019 in his repertoire, but just like he had a hard time going through a song like \u2018Empty Garden\u2019 for John Lennon, he felt the same way when he started thinking about all of the people that he would have to leave behind when he passed on.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not something that anyone wants to think about, but this song almost feels like the spiritual cousin of a song like Paul McCartney\u2019s \u2018The End of the End\u2019. The day that either of them passes away is hopefully a long way from today, but when they become a happy memory of days gone by, all that the fans will remember is the joy that they brought to everyone whenever their songs came on.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
