I tell people I gamble on startups and the stock market.

In high school, my friends and I played a lot of board games and cards. Mostly it was an excuse to drink cheap Black Label beer and smoke Camel Lights until well past 2 a.m. I was never any good at most of the games. We never played for money, only for shots of Jägermeister for the losers. Yeah, that stuff was big in the ’80s.

It didn’t matter who won. What mattered was that we were all at the table together.

Not much has changed. These days I play cards with family, and we put up some money, counted in quarters, for whoever wins at the end. I’ve been in a couple of fantasy leagues, but they never grabbed me. Mine were online, and I never got any sense of brotherhood from a screen.

Sports betting apps have made gambling easier than ever, and for a lot of men that’s a real problem. But the problem isn’t the bet. It’s betting alone.

Why Apps Can’t Replace the Table

The American Institute for Boys and Men has been tracking what happened when sports betting moved onto our phones. In a recent policy brief, its researchers point out that in just eight years, legal sports betting went from a niche activity in Nevada to a mass-market product on every smartphone. Today, nearly all bets are placed online.

What drove that growth? Frictionless apps, built on the same playbook as social media: Remove every obstacle, reward you at random, and ping you to come back.

Game night runs on friction. Somebody has to find a night that works, clear the kitchen table, and bring the drinks. Somebody has to settle whether it’s quarters or bragging rights. That hassle keeps most people from playing too often. An app has none of it. It’s open anytime, anywhere, and it doesn’t care if anyone else shows up.

That friction is the whole point. It turns a game into a ritual. Every one of those small jobs is a reason to show up for each other.

The app keeps the game and removes the gathering. You still get the rush of winning and the sting of losing. You just get them alone, on your couch, at 1 a.m.

That’s not a game night. That’s a habit. And for some men, it becomes something worse.

The Table Takes Care of Its Own

My family game nights are about playing and being together. We do bet, but the pool is usually a jar of quarters that anyone can draw from. It’s more about bragging rights than how much you win. The stakes are there to make losing sting a little without breaking the bank.

That jar is the whole idea. Nobody gets priced out of the game.

Turns out that’s not just my table. A recent study of Swedish poker players found the men capped buy-ins and rebuys because they were worried about each other’s money. The care kept the competition in check. The apps work the other way. Sportsbooks have all the data they need to spot a bettor who’s spiraling. Without regulation, the AIBM brief warns, that same data can be used to keep him betting. And the business depends on it: At one major U.S. sportsbook, half a percent of customers generated more than 70 percent of the revenue.

Think about that. At the table, your friends notice when you’re in too deep. The app notices too. It just wants something different.

Your friends watch out for you. The app watches you.

Every Group Needs a Game

Take the money out completely and the table still works.

Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello plays Dungeons & Dragons in actor Joe Manganiello’s basement. Most of the group played as kids, took decades off for careers and families, then came back.

Morello compares it to a high-stakes poker game, except nobody is betting anything. He calls it “a game where friends gather that’s taken deadly seriously.” The seriousness comes from the friends, not the stakes.

The group has rules, too. When Morello wanted to bring in a dad from his kid’s carpool, Manganiello almost said no. He wanted to keep the group tight. The new guy turned out to be Game of Thrones co-creator D.B. Weiss. He got in, then got called out for texting at the table. Every lasting group has unwritten rules like that.

Screenwriters John August and Craig Mazin have kept a D&D campaign going for years. When the pandemic hit, they moved it online rather than drop it.

That’s what a game gives men. Something to do with your hands, so the talking happens side-by-side. A learning curve, so joining means something. And a reason to come back, so the group doesn’t drift. It’s a core idea in The Male Friendship Experience: Friendship needs structure, or it fades.

Pull Up a Chair

You don’t need a celebrity basement or a jar of quarters. You need a table, a game, and a few guys willing to show up.

A recent Psychology Today piece, “Making Friends as We Age,” makes the case that friendship often comes down to logistics: the same people showing up at the same place and time. Card games are one of the ways people are making that happen.

Here’s how to start:

Pick a game with a little complexity: cards, dominoes, a board game, etc. There should be something to learn.
Keep the stakes low: quarters, bragging rights, or nothing at all.
Set a rhythm, not a rigid schedule. Once a month is plenty.
Put the phones away. The texting rule applies to everyone.
Invite one guy who doesn’t know how to play. Then teach him.

That last one matters most. Somebody once taught you the game. Somebody made room for you at the table. Now it’s your turn. Pay it forward. Play for both the love of the game and for the brotherhood it creates.

I’m not much of a gambler.
