Don Henley was nothing if not a perfectionist for everything the Eagles did.

He could have spent time being a respectable drummer that every now and again sang some stuff, but when you have a voice like that, you’re going to want to have a clear knowledge of everything you’re working on before you even think about going into the studio. Everything needed to be perfect by the time the band got around to making their masterpieces, but even when they had the most time in the world, there were many points where the band could have ended up getting in their own way half the time.

Because as much as Henley and Glenn Frey worked together as a team, their clean break was a lot harsher than anyone really expected. Neither of them was mad at the other when Eagles split apart, but they knew they had reached the end of the line when it came to making great music together. It was all about making songs that were better than the last thing they made, but when Hotel California became one of the biggest albums of all time and sold millions of copies around the world, how the hell were they supposed to top what they had already done?

They sure as hell didn’t know, and while they were pretty much fried creatively by the time they came off tour, rushing back into the studio for The Long Run wasn’t anyone’s idea of a good time. All those years on the road had started taking their toll on them, and given that they were pulling teeth to get even half-decent songs off the ground at the time, it was no surprise that they disbanded for a little while.

All of them needed a break from each other, and when they did reassemble to write some new tunes, it was like that magic never left. Henley and Frey were still capable of making great tunes, and while they did balance their solo careers with their touring life with the Eagles, it was a lot easier for Henley to admit when some of their songs were taking shape when working on Long Road Out of Eden.

A lot of people were wondering whether the band would even bother making a new album at all, but it wasn’t like they wanted to leave everyone with a sour taste in their studio output. They had the opportunity to take a final bow on their own terms, and while Henley liked the idea of working on some new material, the honeymoon period didn’t last that long when it came to getting the new songs out the door.

In fact, Henley was already saying that some of the songs weren’t worth celebrating all that much during the promotion for the album, saying, “There are some weak spots. There were four or five more songs that were good but not finished. But we wanted to get it out for Christmas. Again, the dictates of business. Either Christmas, or they’d have to wait for the summer or even next fall to put it out. We’re not getting any younger, so we decided to let it go. But I wasn’t done.”

Further reading: From The Vault

And while the band didn’t have a say in how some of those songs worked out, it’s not like the record is a patchwork job or anything. There are definitely a few tunes that could have been trimmed out or not included entirely, but in terms of getting every band member on the record for a little while, this is the best anyone could have asked for in an Eagles reunion album, especially with Henley writing well above his usual standards on ‘Waiting in the Weeds’.

Now that Frey has long since departed, though, this is the kind of epitaph that most people would have wanted to have while they were still able to do so. Time can be a cruel thing for ageing rockers, but all of them could have at least known that they had done right by their fans by making one last musical diamond.
