\n\tJoseph Gordon-Levitt<\/a>, who was appointed the United Nations\u2019 first global advocate for human-centric digital governance in March, is arguing that instead of being afraid of AI, \u201cwe should be concerned about the people building AI.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a new video interview with The New York Times<\/a>, the actor was asked his current biggest fear about the technology. \u201cI would object to that question just because reducing these concerns into one sound bite of fear \u2014 that\u2019s one of the problems,\u201d Gordon-Levitt responded.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo me, saying: Oh, I\u2019m scared that AI could exterminate all of humanity \u2014 that doesn\u2019t really get at the substance of the concern. There\u2019s real validity to that concern. But that\u2019s not the thing that really worries me,\u201d he said, explaining that his worries are \u201ca lot more complicated and a lot more boring to talk about, because it\u2019s a lot more dense,\u201d citing \u201cthe decline of democracy, the decline of human empathy\u201d as a concern. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThese companies are betting on the notion that they\u2019re going to take over the entire economy. That would be totalitarianism, and that would be really bad,\u201d Gordon-Levitt added. \u201cSimultaneously, these models are being trained to hijack your intimacy, to make friends with you, to get you to fall in love with it. We shouldn\u2019t be scared of an AI. We should be concerned about the people building AI.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Don Jon star previously opened up about his concerns about AI, arguing at a panel hosted by The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> and Autodesk at Sundance that \u201cwe need to build a system for ongoing compensation\u201d as the technology depends on \u201chuman input.\u201d<\/p>\n
