The 1970s were a peculiar time for The Beach Boys<\/a>, and were arguably just as confusing to witness for anyone looking on at them from afar or as a fan.<\/p>\n Despite still being an integral part of the band and contributing as a writer, Brian Wilson continued to avoid the spotlight at the start of the decade, with his schizophrenia diagnosis having presented plenty of challenges for him to ever be able to perform live, and had seen his studio involvement decrease significantly.<\/p>\n It didn\u2019t hamper the band in releasing what would go on to be two of their most acclaimed albums<\/a>: 1970\u2019s Sunflower and 1971\u2019s Surf\u2019s Up, but the group were certainly operating in a much different manner than they previously had been, and tensions behind the scenes then began to lead to issues in the studio.<\/p>\n Output became far less frequent, and different members were being relied upon to write material for the group, some of whom found it a lot easier than others. By the middle of the decade, Brian had re-entered the fray and started performing with the band again, but they were also releasing some of their most drab efforts, such as 1976\u2019s 15 Big Ones. <\/p>\n The consistency that they appeared to have built up towards the end of the 1960s was slowly falling away, and it was hard to see the band as being able to survive such a rocky period.<\/p>\n However, it was around this time that they all began to pursue their own projects outside of the band as well. Carl and the Passions, ostensibly a new incarnation of The Beach Boys helmed by the youngest Wilson brother, Carl, released their sole studio album, So Tough, in 1972, while drummer Dennis tried recording solo material<\/a> of his own during a period where he was becoming increasingly removed from the picture.<\/p>\n At the start of the 1970s, while in exile from the group and omitted from the sessions of multiple Beach Boys albums, Dennis abandoned his solo album halfway through the process. However, by 1974, he\u2019d managed to get a second attempt rolling, and three arduous years later, he was able to release Pacific Ocean Blue, the first and only studio album released under his own name.<\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/p>\n In a 1977 interview with Rock Magazine, he proclaimed that he was proud of what he\u2019d achieved by himself, suddenly becoming responsible for playing more instruments than he had ever done before on a record. However, at the same time, he was terrified of what the prospect of live performances could bring.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s so nerve-wracking to play an album you\u2019ve just done for people,\u201d he noted, adding, \u201cI\u2019m scared. I really am. People say, \u2018Don\u2019t worry, you\u2019re going to be a star.\u2019 But that\u2019s not the point. I just want to do it well enough so I can do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n He wasn\u2019t exactly bothered about acclaim: he just wanted to establish that it was possible<\/a>. Even though Pacific Ocean Blue isn\u2019t as highly regarded as a lot of the work that the band produced together and is seen as something of a cultish anomaly, Dennis had most certainly achieved what he wanted to do, which is to finish something and prove himself as an artist without the need for his brothers.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
