A popular pharmacist-turned-influencer issued a warning regarding just that in one of his videos.

Raj Patel, who describes himself as the ‘Straight-Talking Pharmacist’ on TikTok, has more than 100,000 followers and 611,000 likes. In a recent clip, he discussed whether some symptoms experienced by people taking the popular cholesterol medication could be mistaken for normal signs of ageing.

He said: “Can atorvastatin for high cholesterol give you muscle pain, fatigue and brain fog that makes you feel like you’re ageing? A patient of mine said to me my cholesterol numbers are a lot better, but why do I feel a lot worse? And if you’re on atorvastatin maybe a part of you understands that too.

“He was prescribed it to lower his cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart problems. On paper, it was doing exactly what it should and maybe your results look a lot better too.”

Content cannot be displayed without consent

Patel then described the patient in his example as feeling increasingly exhausted and uncomfortable. He said: “His legs ached when he walked up the stairs. He felt weaker, flatter and not like the person he used to be.

“He thought he was ageing. He even thought he was being dramatic. Muscle aches, weakness and brain fog on atorvastatin are real for some people.”

There is evidence behind part of that warning, but it does not mean atorvastatin causes these symptoms in everyone. NHS guidance lists muscle aches as a common side effect of atorvastatin, while its wider statin guidance also lists feeling more tired or weaker than usual.

Atorvastatin is a member of the drug class known as statins

NICE says muscle pain is a real possible effect of statins, but the increased risk is small compared with similar people not taking them. Its evidence review found that around 16 per cent of people on high-intensity statins reported muscle pain, but only around one in 12 of those cases were likely to have been caused by the statin.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has also recently reviewed the evidence. Its January 2026 safety update said statin treatment caused a small relative increase in first reports of mild muscle pain or weakness, while more than 90 per cent of muscle-symptom reports among trial participants taking statins were not caused by the medicine.

Patel continued: “If a medicine is protecting your heart and quietly stealing your quality of life, that matters. We didn’t just look at his cholesterol. We looked at him because numbers can improve but you can feel worse and that really matters and should never be ignored.”

The evidence is less supportive of linking statins with cognitive decline. NICE says there does not appear to be evidence that statins cause cognitive decline or dementia, while a systematic review of randomised trials and observational studies found no evidence of adverse cognitive effects associated with statin use.

Anyone worried about side effects should speak to their GP or pharmacist rather than stopping atorvastatin themselves. The NHS specifically advises people who have side effects that bother them or do not go away to seek medical advice, and says to keep taking the medicine unless advised otherwise.

A medical professional on TikTok has discussed the idea that taking a popular statin makes you ‘older’ Could…

[43
147134,15427,16591,7658,10577,102,19139,2960,10428,17695,17740,4440,1906,104,262850,617,56,54,55,13963
post-799399","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-healthcare","tag-body-health","tag-cardiac-health","tag-cholesterol","tag-expert-advice","tag-fitness-and-health","tag-health","tag-health-services","tag-healthcare","tag-healthy-eating","tag-healthy-lifestyle","tag-healthy-living","tag-mens-health","tag-mental-health","tag-nhs","tag-social-media-craze","tag-tiktok","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-womens-health
["GET
