As on-court training resumes, she is understood to still be working with her coach Andrew Richardson, the old ally who guided her to the US Open trophy, and whose record with her remains outstanding after her strong performance at Queen’s in June.

In the short term, Australia is sure to be Raducanu’s primary target. Her record at Melbourne’s Australian Open is indifferent, with four of her five appearances having ended in the second round. In 2025, she went one better, scratching out nuggety wins over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Amanda Anisimova – two quality players – before being annihilated by Iga Swiatek in the third round.

Assuming that Raducanu regains full fitness in time for 2027’s Australian Open, she should be able to gain entry to the event via her likely protected ranking. However, you cannot claim a seeding through a protected ranking, so she would be vulnerable to a potential first-round meeting with any of the world’s best players.

Raducanu’s old schoolgirl rival Sonay Kartal has also been using a protected ranking after her own six-month absence with a spinal stress fracture, but Kartal has looked in decent form since her return at the recent Billie Jean King Cup finals in Shenzhen.

On Monday morning in Wuhan, Kartal defeated world No 48 Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets to make it three wins from four tour matches on the Asian swing to date.

Later, in Shanghai, an off-colour Carlos Alcaraz made an unexpected exit as he lost 7-5, 7-6 to Zizou Bergs, the world No 39 from Belgium.

As on-court training resumes, she is understood to still be working with her coach Andrew Richardson, the old…

[38
21399,6962,217,101,5438,118,56,54,55,157732,54657,6546
post-800381","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-australian-open","tag-emma-raducanu","tag-sport","tag-sports","tag-standard","tag-tennis","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-us-content","tag-womens-sport","tag-wta
["GET
