Ronnie Wood<\/a> can\u2019t forget one of the first things Jimi Hendrix<\/a> ever told him. When the future guitar icon met the future Rolling Stone<\/a> in a London club that was central to the \u201860s scene, they shared a moment of frank honesty that surely helped cement their friendship.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Speakeasy is where I first saw him, where I first hung with him,\u201d Wood tells Planet Rock Radio. \u201cHe came and sat in my cubicle when he\u2019d played, and he was saying, \u2018My voice is awful!\u2019 I said, \u2018What are you talking about? I don\u2019t think you should worry about your voice, Jimi, with you playing like that!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Wood also remembers Hendrix\u2019s presence, including a fashion sense that inspired imitation wherever he went. \u201cHis persona was so fantastic. When he walked into a room his clothes just set the whole deal off. There was quite an aura around him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, that extended to his guitar playing, Wood confirms: \u201cHe changed the whole voltage \u2013 the whole way the guitar was headed. He could play the guitar right-handed, left-handed, equally well. It was just like a part of him, the guitar. He\u2019d take his mellowness onto the stage and let his showman out of the cage \u2013 let it gradually come out and be stirred by the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch of an exhibition of his Hendrix-inspired artwork<\/a> \u2013 which runs until April 2027 at Handel Hendrix House, the London apartment where the guitarist lived in 1968 and 1969 \u2013 Wood suggests: \u201cWhat they really need is a bed with all the throws on it. That\u2019s where he spent his time, just playing his guitar on the bed.\u201d<\/p>\n

He points out one of his images on the wall. showing a club stage that includes both of them, saying: \u201cThere\u2019s me spying on him, and later on that evening I got up and played bass with him. And Jeff Beck <\/a>is just out of the picture.\u201c<\/p>\n

Asked whether it\u2019s still possible to find fame the way Hendrix did, he explains why he thinks it is: \u201cJagger<\/a> is always on the [lookout] for talent, and I know Eric<\/a> is. Eric\u2019s one of these guys heard and saw Jimi and passed the word around. It\u2019s everyone sharing and being excited about someone else\u2019s talent and spreading the word rather than keeping it to themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
