The photons are separated by a wavelength-division multiplexer (WDM) and manipulated by an MZI array implementing the unitary operations \\({{\\rm{U}}}_{1}\\) and \\({{\\rm{U}}}_{2}\\). Photon A is routed to a pair of spin–orbit-locked microring resonators (bottom right of the chip) for topology encoding, whereas photon B is directed to a two-dimensional grating coupler (top right of the chip). These operations prepare the photon pair in the entangled state \\({|{{\\chi }}\\rangle }_{{\\rm{AB}}}\\). The bi-photon momentum–polarization entanglement \\({|{{\\chi }}\\rangle }_{{\\rm{AB}}}\\) is characterized by performing quantum state tomography on the momentum of photon A, extracted from the microring resonators, and the polarization of photon B, captured from the two-dimensional grating coupler (Supplementary Section 14). The experimentally retrieved density matrix \\({{{\\rho }}}_{{{\\chi }}}={|{{\\chi }}\\rangle }_{{\\rm{AB}}}{{{\\langle }}{{\\chi }}|}_{{\\rm{AB}}}\\) exhibits a quantum fidelity of 91% ± 2% (Extended Data Fig. 1b). The topology transfer of the skyrmion structure is achieved by transitioning from the single-photon skyrmion on photon A to the correlation between entangled photons A and B. This is done by performing the spin-momentum BSM on photon A. A momentum-dependent spin-flip operation is designed to resolve the non-separability of the spin-momentum Bell states, facilitating efficient BSM with independent operations on spin and momentum (Supplementary Section 15). Consequently, the spin-momentum correlation of photon A is projected onto states \\({|{\\varPhi }^{\\pm }\\rangle }_{{\\rm{A}}}\\) and \\({|{\\varPsi }^{\\pm }\\rangle }_{{\\rm{A}}}\\), as described in equation (3), which generates the entangled skyrmion states \\({|{{{\\psi }}}_{{\\rm{sk}}}\\rangle }_{{\\rm{ent}}}\\), \\({{{\\sigma }}}_{{{z}},{\\rm{B}}}{|{{{\\psi }}}_{{\\rm{sk}}}\\rangle }_{{\\rm{ent}}}\\), \\({{{\\sigma }}}_{{{x}},{\\rm{B}}}{|{{{\\psi }}}_{{\\rm{sk}}}\\rangle }_{{\\rm{ent}}}\\) and \\(-{\\rm{i}}{{{\\sigma }}}_{{y},{\\rm{B}}}{|{{{\\psi }}}_{{\\rm{sk}}}\\rangle }_{{\\rm{ent}}}\\), respectively. Quantum state tomography is then conducted on the tensor-product Hilbert space formed by the OAM of photon A and the polarization of photon B, yielding the four density matrices with an averaged fidelity of 89% ± 2% (Fig. 2b and Supplementary Section 15). The slightly higher mean fidelities of the entangled skyrmion states relative to the single-photon skyrmion state are probably attributable to differences in the tomographic conditions used at different stages of the protocol. The two-photon quantum Stokes parameter distributions are then reconstructed from these density matrices after applying the relevant Pauli operations, featuring entangled skyrmion numbers of 1.981 ± 0.001, 1.981 ± 0.001, 1.979 ± 0.001 and 1.9798 ± 0.0009. It is worth emphasizing that these entangled skyrmion numbers are extracted from quantum correlations between the OAM of photon A and the polarization of photon B, rather than from a classical optical texture. In these extracted entangled skyrmion numbers, the quoted uncertainties are reported using the standard rounding convention described in Supplementary Section 17. This convincingly validates our scheme of topology preparation and transfer through entanglement distribution.

Fig. 2: Experimental characterization of topology transfer.

a, Optical microscopy image of the photonic integrated circuits used to implement the scheme shown in Fig. 1.
