It has been an exciting time for digital video-on-demand releases. Just this past week, Spider-Man: Brand New Day made its digital debut after an incredibly successful box office run, and news of Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey<\/a> dropped today, revealing that the movie will finally be available to watch at home with a November 17 digital release, four months after it released in theaters. The timeframe between theatrical release and VOD varies by movie, with box office performance and word-of-mouth hype usually determining which films go to digital storefronts earlier. Now, another big movie that just released in September is available to watch at home, featuring an impressive cast, including Michael Fassbender<\/a>. <\/p>\n

After a couple of years in the editing room and some last-minute cuts following its Cannes Film Festival premiere, Na Hong-jin’s Hope<\/a> has finally hit digital streaming platforms. Neon acquired the movie for theatrical and home media distribution, adding hype to the project. As a major competitor to New York-based production company A24, Neon has thrived on international distribution of South Korean films, helping the region’s unique film catalog find an audience in North America. Perhaps the most prolific release they’ve acquired was the 2019 film Parasite, which went on to make history by winning both Best International Feature and Best Picture at the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

Hope’s digital release<\/a> will let fans revisit the film at home and help new audiences discover the sci-fi action epic. The build-up to the movie’s theatrical release was interesting, with much of the marketing hiding the plot and the extraterrestrial characters at the heart of the story. The movie’s ambition and scope make it feel like a North American Hollywood blockbuster, so its decision to compete for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival feels fascinating. Moreover, Hope is the first South Korean film to compete for the prestigious award since Decision to Leave in 2022, directed by Park Chan-wook and distributed by Mubi.<\/p>\n

Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon anchor the human characters who drive the narrative at the beginning of the film; the shocking alien twist halfway through Hope’s lengthy runtime also brings new actors into the fray. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander both play unique extraterrestrials: Fassbender portrays the alien warrior and bodyguard Ma’veyyo, and Vikander plays J’aur, the Empress of the alien race that has landed on Earth. The film is packed with interesting concepts and set pieces, blending visual effects with practical stunt work and action, making it hard not to be impressed, even if the VFX can feel unfinished in certain areas. <\/p>\n

Hope has already proven a success at the international box office and a domestic triumph, despite earning only $46.8 million globally. Moreover, despite not making much (earning $3.2 million in its opening weekend), the movie still became the third-highest-grossing Korean film of all time in North America, behind The King of Kings and Parasite. Director Na Hong-jin has also confirmed that he has plans for sequels to Hope, which makes sense since the film ends on a cliffhanger with none of the story resolved. It will be interesting to see whether VOD sales success helps drive hype for a sequel, given that Hope is one of the most expensive South Korean films ever made. <\/p>\n
