A popular golf course has closed \u2013 and, for once, it won\u2019t make way for new homes.<\/p>\n
Dauphin Highlands Golf Course, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is no longer in play after it was sold as local authorities looked to recover several million dollars\u2019 worth of debt. \u00a0<\/p>\n
PGA pro Doc Greenlee<\/a>, who grew up on Dauphin Highlands, described the 1995 Bill Love layout as \u201ca top-tier public course\u201d as he played it for one last time.<\/p>\n Speaking to WGAL-TV<\/a>, he continued: \u201cYou can compare this to a lot of other areas in Pennsylvania and this is up there on layout and conditions and the way they take care of it. So, it\u2019s going to be a little bit of a shame to see this go.<\/p>\n \u201cI owe a lot to this course and it\u2019s sad to see it go, but it\u2019s one of the best in the area by far,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s bittersweet. It\u2019s kind of like a funeral out here.\u201d<\/p>\n So what\u2019s next? The course had been on the market for a little over a year before Harrisburg I LLC stepped in with a $45 million bid.<\/p>\n That company has, in turn, sold it to Texas-based developer Corscale, which is now planning a $10.5 billion AI data center on the site to the southwest of the state capital on the banks of the Susquehanna River.<\/p>\n While there are still additional permits and approvals to be obtained, construction is expected to start next year, with completion in 2028.<\/p>\n For now, though, all that\u2019s left of Dauphin Highlands is a website<\/a> with a message which has \u2013 somewhat ironically \u2013 been created using AI. \u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThank you for the memories,\u201d it reads. \u201cThe final putt may drop, but the friendships, traditions and memories made here will live on.<\/p>\n \u201cThank you for 30 unforgettable years.\u201d<\/p>\n Main image for illustrative purposes only.<\/p>\n \t\t\t
