Fusing metal and hard rock with aggressively delivered lyrics, the band made music that was anything but subtle, but that only accounts for half of what they stood for as a project.

This unignorable presentation was essentially the perfect way of ensuring that they were heard, and their lyrics had plenty to say. As a group of proud socialists, their decision to speak up against institutional violence, class divides, and racial tension through their incendiary lyrics was celebrated by those who shared their sociopolitical beliefs and marked a sharp contrast with the regressive messaging that so many other contemporary bands of a similar ilk were delivering.

On top of this, their equally intense live performances, sometimes staged guerrilla-style, often drew attention, but it was primarily through their expert songcraft that they actually gained something of a fervent following, particularly among politically motivated audiences and those who considered themselves radicals.

However, the main issue with presenting yourself this way is that it often imposes a ceiling, and acts that are explicit in their discussion of sensitive topics or are generally considered to be too heavy for mainstream appeal are forever consigned to cult status. For Rage Against the Machine to have established such a prominent fanbase while still pushing their agenda is remarkable, and calls into question what the mainstream will actually tolerate.

This in itself is a great achievement, but for their trailblazing guitarist, Tom Morello, one song stands out as being the high point of the band’s career. Speaking to Total Guitar, he revealed that their 1992 breakthrough, ‘Killing in the Name’, is the song that he remains proudest of from his time with the band, and is the one song that he wishes to be remembered for.

“That song even went to the top of the pop chart in the UK over Christmas in 2009, long after its original release,” he said, referencing the song’s bizarre resurgence 17 years after it was first issued. “I still hear it everywhere around the world now, and of course, I’m very happy about that.”

Further reading: From The Vault

It may have only got to number one as part of a protest against the monopoly that talent competitions like The X Factor used to have over the Christmas charts in the UK, but that was fitting: Rage Against the Machine were designed to be a protest group, and them being chosen as the most appropriate act to steal the prize from the would-be recipient, Joe McElderry, was a gigantic ‘fuck you’ to the safe fare that plagued the singles chart.

Of course, it’s known for more than just that, and there isn’t another song in the band’s catalogue that has managed to become more ubiquitous. The outrage in Zack de la Rocha’s vocals as he raps about police brutality stands tall as arguably one of the most important performances of the 20th century. And the urgency with which the band deliver this political salvo will forever ring true as an anthem against corruption and misuse of power as long as such heinous acts continue.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

Credit: Danny Clinch Fri 16 October 2026 2:00, UK Rage Against the Machine were never the sort of…

[28
32677,199106,96,89073,5204,128,229,41825,678,2777,56,54,55
post-804123","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1990s","tag-199106","tag-entertainment","tag-hard-rock","tag-metal","tag-music","tag-politics","tag-rage-against-the-machine","tag-rap","tag-tom-morello","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
