A dinosaur unearthed on the Isle of Wight may be the largest land predator that ever roamed Europe, say scientists. See SWNS story SWNNpredator. It was a cross between T Rex and the Great White shark - as it was also able to hunt in water. The terrifying creature had a face like a crocodile, razor-sharp teeth and claws - and a whip-like tail. It was as big as a school bus - over 33 feet long and weighing more than five tons. The fossilised bones include large pelvic and tail vertebrae amongst other pieces. They were dug up near Compton Chine on the southwest coast and date back 125 million years - a period of rising sea levels. The bipedal beast had short arms - like T Rex. Stalking lagoons and sandflats, its bonecrushing jaws snapped large fish in half - and even other dinosaurs. It was a member of the spinosaurids - meaning 'spine lizard.' They were the first dinosaurs to swim. Bones grew on their backs to form what is referred to as a 'sail'. They were up to seven feet long - and connected by skin." decoding="async" loading="lazy"/>
Many dinosaur bones have been unearthed on the Isle of Wight (Picture: SWNS)

Professor Paul Barrett, the study’s senior author from the Natural History Museum, said many dino bones have been dug up on the Isle of Wight.

‘Work like this shows the exceptional value of working with historical museum collections where there are still many discoveries to be made,’ he added.

Researchers took a CT scan of the fossil to compare it with other meat-eating dinos, like tiny-armed tyrannosaurs and the spinosaurs, known for the sail-like spines on their backs.

Yet the team found the skull had an odd, oval hole and an hourglass-shaped crest, something not seen in any other known species of dinosaur.

Mathematical modelling also provided new insight into how megaraptors spread over time.

Fossil scraps suggest they were the great hunters of the early Cretaceous in what is now Asia before moseying to Europe.

Tens of millions of years later, they died out in northern Europe while megaraptors elsewhere grew larger and developed 35cm-long claws.

Researchers aren’t sure why megaraptors went extinct in some places but not others.
