Actress Selma Blair was arrested at JFK International Airport last week<\/a>, charged with two counts of assault in the second degree after reports that she became \u201cphysically abusive\u201d during a flight. Although a representative for Blair gave a brief statement at the time\u2014asserting that \u201cSelma experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct\u201d and that \u201cUpon landing, she received immediate medical attention and is currently in stable condition\u201d\u2014Blair\u2019s team has now issued a significantly longer statement addressing allegations and rumors about what happened on the flight\u2014among other things.<\/p>\n

This is per\u00a0People<\/a>, which received the statement from a spokesperson for the\u00a0Hellboy\u00a0alum. \u201cSince Sunday night, the public account of what happened to Selma aboard a flight to New York has been built almost entirely on a police statement and a decade-old headline,\u201d the spokesperson said, referencing the\u00a0last time Blair had a public incident on a flight, back in 2016<\/a>. Although still vague on many points, the statement went on to attempt to \u201cCorrect the record on a few points already in public circulation. Selma Blair experienced a medical emergency on the flight. There was no attempt to open the door of the aircraft. Selma did not intend to harm anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blair has been accused of injuring two flight attendants on the flight, as well as allegedly kicking one of the Port Authority police officers who came on to the flight after pilots reported the incident. (That same report indicated that Blair may have hit her head on one of the plane\u2019s bulkheads during the altercation.) The statement linked at least some of these behaviors back to Blair\u2019s very public diagnosis with multiple sclerosis back in 2018<\/a>, and also appeared to be attempting to swat down some rumors<\/a> about said diagnosis at the same time, stating, \u201cThe suggestion by anyone that Selma does not have multiple sclerosis is outrageous. Her diagnosis has been public since 2018. What Selma has been able to do physically in the years since is nothing short of a miracle. She still has bad days, and she lives with pain daily. Selma also has pseudobulbar affect<\/a>, a neurological condition secondary to her MS, which bears directly on how a medical episode presents to people who do not know her. For the same reason, she travels with a service dog who doesn\u2019t leave her side, and the authorities took her dog from her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement went on to talk about Blair\u2019s current workload, which, again, feels slightly off-to-the-center of the actual allegations against her, but which apparently involves acting work, running various clothing and wellness brands, and being \u201ca visible and relentless advocate for disability rights, for the MS community, and this year for the Jewish community in the face of rising antisemitism.\u201d (It feels worth noting that Blair has come under criticism in recent years<\/a> for statements perceived as Islamophobic in reaction to the October 7 attacks in Israel.)
