The proposal is expected to be tabled in the coming weeks.

The environment, food and rural affairs select committee urged the Government to reject the plan on Friday.

Alistair Carmichael, who chairs the committee, said: “Customers will be incredulous if the company’s creditors are now able to pile on another multi-billion-pound debt injection while the Government does nothing.”

He added: “The committee does not believe [that] Thames’s creditors have the company’s, the public’s or the environment’s best interests at heart … The Government needs to act decisively to draw a line under this sorry saga.”

Andy Burnham’s pledge to take public control of water companies risks unleashing a fresh debt crisis for struggling…

[5
19306,84,2980,460,59,5438,56,54,55,231614,231613
post-805766","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-andy-burnham","tag-business","tag-companies","tag-debt","tag-gb","tag-standard","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-utilities-and-support-services","tag-water-and-sanitation
["GET
