A new community initiative aims to boost heart health in some of Sheffield’s most deprived areas. <\/p>\n
Sessions of the ‘Moving More Living Longer’ scheme will be based in places like barbers, working men’s clubs and GP surgeries and give those with heart and other health issues access to advice and exercise, as well as tackling treatment barriers such as social isolation.<\/p>\n
The 10-month programme by the Heart Research UK charity will be delivered by fitness providers Community Wellness Services CIC (CWS).<\/p>\n
CWS director David Birds said the aim was to provide “the right support in familiar community settings” in order to help people “make healthier changes that last”. <\/p>\n
People aged 31-75 will be referred to the scheme through Sheffield GP practices within the Peak Edge Primary Care Network.<\/p>\n
It has been designed for people with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, obesity and physical inactivity – factors increasing the risk of poor heart health.<\/p>\n
Support comes in the form of programmed exercise, group work to tackle social isolation and guidance on healthy eating on a budget.<\/p>\n
The number of people suffering with heart disease in Sheffield is higher than the national average, according to the national charity, “largely due to persistent health inequalities across the city”.<\/p>\n
“Preventing heart disease is about more than telling people to be more active,” said Lauren Hewitt, from Heart Research UK.<\/p>\n
