Exactly three weeks ago, Brandon McNulty was on his way to an unlikely road race victory<\/a> at the World Championships in Montr\u00e9al, Canada. Having earned himself the privilege of wearing the rainbow bands for the next year, the American added the Italian Classics to a 2026 season that began way back in February \u2013 and on Sunday afternoon, in his seventh and last one-day race in two weeks, the 28-year-old got the job done.<\/p>\n “It\u2019s super nice. It was special to win the jersey, but I really wanted to try to win one race before the end of the year in it,” McNulty said in his winner’s interview. “Today\u2019s the last day to do it, so I\u2019m really happy.”<\/p>\n <\/p>\n How Team USA won Worlds before it started<\/p>\n Numbers in the front group and an agreement to be selfless paid off in Montreal.<\/p>\n The Veneto Classic is a punchy and dynamic race that winds through vineyards and olive groves, and leans heavily on the short and sharp cobbled climb of La Tisa, or the ‘Muro della Tisa’ (400 metres at 10.8%, including a midsection of 17%), which on Sunday was taken on five times, with several other lumps and bumps along the way.<\/p>\n Just as he has been in most of this Italian block, McNulty was UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s designated leader for the season finale, and for the nth time this autumn\/fall, the American animated the race. Along with teammates Pavel Sivakov, Beno\u00eet Cosnefroy and Filippo Baroncini, McNulty made it into the decisive move of 20-odd riders on the Muro della Tisa circuits, before going clear with Anthon Charmig (Uno-X Mobility) with 40 km to go. The pair of them were kept close by the chasers at first, but the group quickly began to disintegrate, and UAE kept the upper hand by ensuring there was representation to disrupt any chasing efforts.<\/p>\n McNulty and Charmig worked well together until the final time up the cobbles of the Muro della Tisa, by which point they’d established over a minute’s advantage to the first chase group. McNulty tried to use the short climb as a launchpad, but Charmig was up to the task of matching the world champion, reacting even while his tyres skittered over the jagged surface.
