It was like a thousand tiny lights, primed for attack, and Debbie Harry was having none of it.

Adorned in a neon pink babydoll nightie and heels, Harry mirrored all their rage and frustration and flipped off the crowd, perhaps hoping that the punk spirit might unite them all and the band could do what they’d set out to do: Play a killer set.

Further reading: From The Vault

Things changed when someone threw a glass bottle square at Harry’s head; she threw it back, enraged, while drummer Clem Burke used his cymbals as a shield from the onslaught until he finally knocked the whole drum kit over, absolutely fuming.

The band wasn’t done yet: If the message wasn’t clear enough, Harry leaned into the microphone and yelled, “Fuck you, Philadelphia!” for all 18,000 sets of ears to hear. The disaster hit the press the next day, with Marie O’Donnell writing in the Philadelphia Inquirer, “The first act of the night’s bill, Blondie, was treated in a way I have never before witnessed. The group was pelted with garbage by a drugged, hostile audience.”

We can only guess at the kind of downtrodden, disheartened conversations that bounced back and forth between the band in the dressing room that night; fame was hard, and maybe they weren’t cut out for it at all. And damn, did those glow sticks sting. Luckily, Blondie didn’t have to wait long until their hit, ‘Heart of Glass’, took the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100, and the bandmates finally got their due.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

Credit: Far Out / Chrysalis October 20th, 2026 · 2:00am BST The city of Philadelphia has a mind…

[28
42201,173019,50195,50197,96,128,24393,56,54,55
post-808266","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-1970s","tag-173019","tag-blondie","tag-debbie-harry","tag-entertainment","tag-music","tag-philadelphia","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
