At this time of year, most music lovers are looking for the perfect cosy fix for their autumn<\/a> cravings, turning to all those seasonal classics to get them in the right mood for the final months of the year.<\/p>\n

Others are left ruminating on the passage of time and how, every year, summer seems to pass by in the mere blink of an eye. For those people, Elvis Presley\u2019s 1961 classic, Blue Hawaii, is the perfect remedy.<\/p>\n

Released almost 65 years ago on November 22nd, 1961, Blue Hawaii isn\u2019t exactly what you\u2019d consider quintessential winter viewing. In fact, the entire tone of the film screams hot sun and summertime beaches, with Presley stepping into the role of the charming Army veteran Chad, who returns to Hawaii for some much-needed downtime.<\/p>\n

At the time, Presley\u2019s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, had his sights set on one soundtrack album a year, alongside strict targets and restrictions on Presley\u2019s pop singles<\/a>. Blue Hawaii formed the ideal soundtrack for this goal. The soundtrack, released on October 20th, 1961, was designed to reflect the film\u2019s summer-in-Hawaii tone with subtle Hawaiian music sensibilities included throughout the soundtrack as well as an arrangement from the traditional Hawaiian song \u2018Aloha \u2018Oe\u2019.<\/p>\n

In addition to this, the soundtrack also borrowed from Bing Crosby\u2019s 1937 film Waikiki Wedding and added sprinklings of other styles and eras, including \u2018Hawaiian Wedding Song\u2019, which was taken from a 1926 operetta, \u2018No More\u2019, which was inspired by Spanish song \u2018La Paloma\u2019, and, of course, \u2018Can\u2019t Help Falling in Love\u2019, which is based on the 18th-century French song \u2018Plaisir d\u2019amour\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018Can\u2019t Help Falling in Love\u2019 was a particularly notable achievement for the King, not just in terms of capturing the cultural importance of the movie (despite its initial reviews) and Presley\u2019s newfound dominance as a defining Hollywood hotshot<\/a>, but also with the singer\u2019s broader transition from straight-up rock icon into a major mainstream pop culture force. <\/p>\n

The song even became a staple of his live sets, usually performed at the end of his shows and becoming a moment concertgoers would talk about long after the curtain fell. In keeping with the original theme, it was also performed as the closer for Presley\u2019s Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite concert in 1973, when he appeared adorned in his iconic cape, which he then threw into the audience. <\/p>\n

The song was also the last one he ever performed live at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis in 1977<\/a>. Of all the hits and deep cuts Presley recorded, it might seem an unlikely song with which to bookend a legend\u2019s career, given its disarming simplicity. Or perhaps you would, considering the song\u2019s positioning in the broader context of his career. <\/p>\n

However, that\u2019s beside the point when you consider all the reasons why the song remains a significant cultural touchpoint in modern, mainstream music. After all, much like its source material, \u2018Can\u2019t Help Falling in Love\u2019 doesn\u2019t really belong to any time, space, or even season, warming even the coldest of hearts in the depths of winter with its charming, timeless appeal.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
