The silky smooth tones of Morgan Freeman narrating the story is just one of many reasons why The Shawshank Redemption<\/a> endures as one of the most beloved movies ever made, opening the doors to an entire secondary career for the actor.<\/p>\n These days, having the Academy Award-winning legend on voiceover duties has almost become a clich\u00e9<\/a>, but Frank Darabont\u2019s unforgettable adaptation of the Stephen King short story marked the first time Freeman had ever narrated a feature. It was far from the last, of course, but it remains the finest.<\/p>\n It\u2019s impossible to imagine anything other than his syrupy intonations regaling the audience with the trials and tribulations faced by Tim Robbins\u2019 Andy Dufresne on the inside of the titular facility, with the decision to forego the red-headed Irishman of the source material<\/a> in favour of Freeman\u2019s wisened sage one of the best page-to-screen alterations there\u2019s ever likely to be.<\/p>\n No matter how many times anybody has seen The Shawshank Redemption, the ending remains every bit as uplifting as it does the first time, with Andy and Red being reunited on the beaches of Zihuatanejo after the latter finally gets granted parole and sets out to complete the final stage of their shared journey by reuniting with his escaped best friend.<\/p>\n And yet, it almost wasn\u2019t him. Obviously, Freeman is not a white man of Irish descent, so, naturally, some of the original contenders from the part had nothing in common with the exposition master, other than being esteemed veterans who could hold their own against a lengthy monologue and come out on top.<\/p>\n Gene Hackman was near the top of the pile<\/a>, as you\u2019d expect when the role required an older gentleman with gravitas coming out of their ears, and for the very same reasons, names like Robert Duvall, Paul Newman, and even Clint Eastwood were being bandied around before Freeman got the nod.<\/p>\n Morgan Freeman\u2019s voice turned Shawshank into something sacred<\/p>\n The film was supposed to end on the more ambiguous note of Red on the bus to Mexico, but the response from test screenings encouraged Darabont to shoot a more definitive finale that would send everyone home happy. Even at that, Freeman disagreed with the filmmaker\u2019s initial intentions.<\/p>\n Although the actor was fully on board with resolving the story in the way that it ultimately unfolded, he admitted to The Daily News<\/a> that he drew a line: \u201cFrank thought I should be blowing that harmonica that Andy gave me, and I refused,\u201d he said, describing it as \u201csort of asinine, sort of cliched, sort of unnecessary, and overkill.\u201d<\/p>\n The final moments of The Shawshank Redemption are iconic for a reason, and it\u2019s hard to disagree with Freeman\u2019s assessment that ladling even more sentimentality on top would have softened its impact. That\u2019s the interpretation the majority of viewers will have taken from the film, and it\u2019s also both the most simple and the one best befitting of their shared experience as inmates, confidants, and inseparable platonic soulmates. Fortunately for Freeman, he didn\u2019t have to be haunted by the sound of a harmonica whistling through the wind after he put his foot down and refused to do it.<\/p>\n Even without picking up a chisel or crawling through a sewer pipe, Freeman chiselled his own legacy<\/a> into Shawshank\u2019s walls simply by speaking. There\u2019s a texture to his delivery that defies explanation \u2013 a kind of lived-in truth that makes every word stick. It\u2019s not just narration; it\u2019s communion. When he reflects on hope, friendship or time itself, it doesn\u2019t sound like a script; it sounds like memory. That subtle shift in tone \u2013 from regret to resolve, from weariness to wonder \u2013 is what gives Shawshank its lasting heartbeat.<\/p>\n Years later, Red\u2019s voice still echoes through contemporary culture. You hear it in parodies, in voiceover auditions, in documentaries desperate for a touch of class. I mean, bloody hell, Freeman didn\u2019t just narrate a story, he anchored it.<\/a> Without him, the film\u2019s sense of quiet poetry might\u2019ve drifted off like smoke.
