This is the first time the total has been below 700,000 since February to April 2021.

The ONS says:

double quotation markThis is mainly from smaller firms, who continue to suggest that they may not be recruiting because of increased labour costs.

That’s a reference to the higher employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs) brought in by Healey’s predecessor, Rachel Reeves, and the rise in the minimum wage, which have made it costlier to hire staff.

More to follow….

The agenda

7am BST: UK labour market data

10am BST: ZEW index of eurozone economic sentiment

10am BST: Eurozone construction output for August

2.30pm BST: BIST Committee questions Secretary of State Jonathan Reynolds

Share

Updated at 02.52 EDT

Introduction: UK unemployment rate falls in pre-budget boost Good morning, and welcome to our rolling coverage of business,…

[11
84,1294,56,54,55
post-808416","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy","tag-business","tag-economy","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
