A ‘fairytale romance’ has ended in heartbreak after a woman died suddenly on the school run. From the moment they first set eyes on one another, Carrie and Brad Pierce believed they were destined to grow old together.<\/p>\n
That was, until the mother of three collapsed while on the school run. And by the time her husband reached her side, she was already gone.<\/p>\n
At just 36 years old, the former McDonald’s manager passed away from a condition that often goes undetected in women \u2013 just like in her case. “I thought Carrie was just stressed when I got the call to say she’d collapsed,” said Brad, an online manager from Rochford in Essex.<\/p>\n
“When the medics told me her heart had stopped, I was speechless. I sat with her, feeling numb. Then, they called time. How could she have gone?<\/p>\n
“How could she leave our kids without a mum and me without my wife? I knew it wasn’t her fault \u2013 but none of it made sense.”<\/p>\n

Only weeks into their relationship, her father died suddenly from an unexplained dissected aortic aneurysm – when a weak spot in the main artery tears – in his 40s.<\/p>\n Navigating their grief side by side, the couple formed an unbreakable bond, eventually marrying and having three children, Olivia, 14, Archie, 10, and Noah, six. Their youngest later began experiencing hearing difficulties and recurring ear infections, and was also showing signs of a protruding chest and long limbs. Carrie fought tooth and nail for answers, and eventually Noah was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome in October 2025.<\/p>\n Marfan syndrome – what is it?<\/p>\n The syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue that supports and shapes the structure of organs. The NHS says<\/a> symptoms include being tall; having heart defects; having unusually long and slender limbs, fingers and toes; and lens dislocation \u2013 where the lens of the eye falls into an abnormal position.<\/p>\n The pair recognised the name instantly, as it’s exactly what the coroner found her dad had \u2013 and was the cause of his death. While women are also carriers of the gene, they are often misdiagnosed \u2013 or not until later on in life \u2013 due to symptoms presenting as mild or overlapping with other conditions, such as eczema<\/a> and asthma. Growing up, only Carrie’s brother was tested, as their mum was allegedly told it could only be passed on to boys.<\/p>\n But following Noah’s diagnosis, doctors recommended she undergo screening. This was put on hold, however, due to other appointments relating to her youngest’s condition. Had she received the heart screening, her own diagnosis would also have come to light. And the family say it’s likely that potentially life-saving surgery would have gone ahead. Tragically, however, four months passed \u2013 and this is when Carrie sadly lost her life.<\/p>\n Brad, aged 37, said: “Noah went back to school and had an inset day. So after dropping off Archie, Carrie took him home. Just before noon, my phone rang at work and it was Carrie’s mum saying I had to rush home. When I pulled up, there were two ambulances and police cars, too.”<\/p>\n After 40 minutes of trying to restart her heart, she died on January 5 this year.
