Going further, Meta accused Entrepreneur Media of \u201cspeculation,\u201d claiming there is \u201cno basis\u201d for suspecting that \u201csomeone at Meta must have \u2018approved\u2019 a \u2018decision\u2019 to perform a seeding activity that specific mitigations were deployed to avoid.\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead of naming staff and providing specifics like their \u201crole, approximate dates of involvement,\u201d and \u201cwhether the person made or contributed to the decision and\/or authorized, ratified, directed, permitted, or approved it,\u201d Meta suggested that it only provide names. (Hixon disagreed that would be appropriate.)<\/p>\n
To avoid naming executives, Meta explained that it wasn\u2019t common practice for leadership to make \u201cformal\u201d decisions when acquiring datasets for early AI training on models like Llama 1 and 2. Only later on, Meta claimed, did that \u201cinitial informal approach\u201d give \u201cway to more structured review and approval processes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Not buying Meta\u2019s arguments, Hixon said that authors did not limit their request to formal decisions, while agreeing that Meta must do more to answer questions about who \u201cmade, authorized, or approved any decision to obtain or download the shadow libraries.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another tactic Meta used was to claim that torrenting approvals came from \u201ccollaborative\u201d talks, so there isn\u2019t \u201ca single decision-maker.\u201d Again, Hixon suggested Meta was reading the authors\u2019 request too narrowly. Their motion did \u201cnot presume that Meta had a single decision maker; it asks about all the decision makers,\u201d Hixon said.<\/p>\n
Finally, Meta must also answer questions about what happened to pirated works that were not used for AI training, Hixon said.<\/p>\n
