William Simpson, aged 19, passed away on May 3, 2026<\/p>\n

An inspirational teenager who \u2018defied the odds\u2019 tragically died as a result of his life-saving surgery. William Simpson, aged 19, was discovered at 8.30am on Sunday, May 3, after passing away in his sleep.<\/p>\n

William was born with congenital mitral valve stenosis, a rare birth defect which restricts the flow of blood around the body. The Sentinel has followed the brave youngster\u2019s courageous medical journey since 2008.<\/p>\n

Before his first birthday, William had already survived two bouts of open-heart surgery – having his entire ventricle replaced with an artificial valve. He was then placed onto the heart transplant register after his valve replacement started to fail.<\/p>\n

Nine years later, William was taken off the heart transplant register as doctors believed he was too weak to survive the procedure. Loved-ones were told to enjoy what little time they had left with him.<\/p>\n

But the awe-inspiring youth defied the odds and continued to survive. William was placed back onto the transplant list in 2021. He finally received his new heart in 2023 – just three days after sitting his GCSE exams.<\/p>\n

Sadly, William’s incredible journey was cut tragically short earlier this year.<\/p>\n

At an inquest into William\u2019s death, Dad Chris said: \u201cOn May 2, William was feeling fine and in full spirits. He went out with his former carer to watch the Port Vale game. He then went to church. At no point did he say he was feeling poorly.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Mum Tracy discovered William lying unresponsive on his bedroom floor the following morning. Paramedics rushed to the family\u2019s Weston Coyney home – but William was pronounced dead at 8.56am.<\/p>\n

Pathologist Dr Martin Goddard performed a post-mortem examination. He found that William sadly died after his new heart was rejected.<\/p>\n

Dr Goddard explained: \u201cLooking at the muscular part of the heart, I could see it was being damaged by white blood cells. This is the typical appearance of acute heart transplant rejection. This cellular rejection is similar to the episode he suffered in December 2024. Acute cellular rejection is associated with sudden death and it can be asymptomatic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill also had signs of chronic long-term rejection. This could be seen in the narrowing of his arteries. This form of rejection is almost inevitable in heart transplant patients. The time of its onset can change, but it can become relentless and aggressive. Ultimately, it limits the life expectancy of the patient.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Dr Sai Bhagra oversaw William\u2019s care. He explained that acute and chronic rejection are both inevitable risks of heart transplant procedures.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur immune system recognises \u2018self\u2019 and destroys anything that is \u2018non-self\u2019,\u201d Dr Bhagra explained. \u201cThat is how it fights infection, because it recognises bugs as being \u2018non-self\u2019. However, our immune system has a similar response to transplanted organs. Because it has come from a different person, our immune system tries its best to destroy it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Bhagra added: \u201cYounger transplant patients are more at risk of rejection, because their immune system is overactive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coroner Fiona Gingell accepted chronic and acute organ rejection following a heart transplant as the cause of death. She said \u2018William died due to a recognised complication of medical intervention\u2019.<\/p>\n

Ms Gingell concluded: \u201cSadly, rejection is a risk that cannot be avoided with this type of surgery. We\u2019ve heard that, even if all medications are taken as they should be, the risk remains. Will\u2019s young age probably increased this risk. But this surgery was necessary. Because, without it, [his life may have been shorter].<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to end by expressing my sincere condolences to William\u2019s family, both personally and on behalf of the Stoke-on-Trent Coroners\u2019 Service. I am really sorry for what you have all had to go through.<\/p>\n

“It is a tragic loss of life in someone so young who clearly had an awful lot to live for. It\u2019s clear he was well-loved by his family and the much wider community.\u201d<\/p>\n
