(ABC North and West SA: Viki Ntafillis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Hillier is from Port Pirie, about 230 kilometres north of Adelaide in South Australia&#8217;s Mid North, and lives with autism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When he was younger, he aspired to work in cooking or cleaning roles, but said he had not had any success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People cannot support people with disabilities and that&#8217;s made it hard for people to achieve my goals,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;My job provider provided all what I could do, but we couldn&#8217;t find anything, I&#8217;m just left doing trolley collecting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve tried multiple times to get multiple jobs \u2026 they don&#8217;t accept people with support workers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When his disability support worker found a local micro barista course tailored to people living with disabilities, he took the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I felt overwhelmed, I was ecstatic to meet Emily,&#8221; Mr Hillier said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[The course was] very motivating, and [could lead to] another job opportunity for me \u2026 hopefully at a coffee shop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man pours water from a kettle into a takeaway coffee cup. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/6530e1392b4392d3f0f29e3a5b9ac329\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">James Hillier says he found the micro barista course &#8220;very motivating&#8221;. (ABC North and West SA: Viki Ntafillis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">EMPower Pathways director Emma Oxford, who developed the micro course, said there were significant barriers to employment for regional people living with a disability, including accessing training.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If it&#8217;s not in our town \u2026 [there are] travel factors, transport factors,&#8221; Ms Oxford said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[The micro course] is very tailored, it&#8217;s been small in size, we&#8217;ve had five people and we&#8217;ve been able to stop and start as many times as it&#8217;s taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Sometimes if I was talking for too long, it was time to get up and have a movement break.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman in a black and purple top has blonde hair and black glasses, stands in front of a table with a coffee machine.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/d8f1c61b31f0ba478f6e49bae8ca6a7d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Emmalee Oxford set up a micro coffee course to give her participants an insight into what an accredited course would be like. (ABC North and West SA: Viki Ntafillis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Oxford said she knew the challenges people with disabilities faced when seeking work firsthand, as her four children each have an intellectual disability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For my child to be successful in the workforce, I had to employ them first in a previous role that I had to support them [in] to build the skills,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have faced, unfortunately, that disabled people are seen as trolley collectors, cleaners, and whilst they feel very successful doing those things, there&#8217;s not enough of those roles for everyone.&#8221;Challenging community stigma<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Four hours south-west in Port Lincoln, Estelle Care Services managing director Alyssa Callaway said there was &#8220;a really big gap&#8221; in skill building for people with disabilities seeking work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;One of the things that&#8217;s missing is that ability to go and get a job in a standard social environment,&#8221; Ms Callaway said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Everybody has something valuable to contribute to society and finding out what that is really important to every individual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">To combat this, she has built a cafe inside her day options centre where her participants can work, and plans for another area to become a commercial kitchen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[That] is not only going to help that individual but also help challenge that community stigma,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Also in town, Boston Bean Coffee Company has been employing people living with disabilities since opening in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Owner Sue Scott said it came down to wanting the best for all people.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman stands in front of a coffee shop that says 'Boston Bean Coffee Company' on a sign. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1687e690b1952aaa0009d3f797e44c7c\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sue Scott has been employing people living with a disability since opening her business in 2018. (ABC Eyre Peninsula: Tim McGlone)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[People with a disability] go all the way through high school and they&#8217;re stimulated, they&#8217;ve got mates around them,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They graduate \u2026 and then don&#8217;t necessarily have anything from then onwards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You want to give the opportunity to be able to do some work \u2026 to think about what they want to do for their future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of opportunities, and until we talk about it, we&#8217;ll never know what&#8217;s going to be available.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Employee Darcy Reading said work was an &#8220;opportunity to have some independence&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s just giving me a job to pay [for things], trying to like help my family,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I like to keep moving, I&#8217;m not the sort of guy \u2026 to just stand around doing nothing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with sandy blonde hair wears a dark grey jumper and orange earplugs in a cafe backroom. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/6a33f619f9734df3588bcccb7cf095eb\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Darcy Reading has been working at Boston Bean Coffee Company since it opened its doors in 2018. (ABC Eyre Peninsula: Tim McGlone)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For those living with a disability and hesitant about finding work, Mr Reading said it was about &#8220;believing in yourself&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Keep working towards your goal and it doesn&#8217;t matter which goal,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Keep striving \u2026 keep moving forward and keep growing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Uncovering &#8216;hidden capacity&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The federal government provides support to eligible employees living with a disability, or employers hiring them, through the Employment Assistance Fund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Flinders University Research Fellow in Disability Employment Jung Yoon said her lived experience with disability had been &#8220;very beneficial&#8221; to her field of research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Her 16-year-old daughter, Joanne, lives with complex disabilities, including non-verbal autism and hearing loss \u2014 <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-17\/inclusive-hiring-cognitive-disabilities-employment\/104823792\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104823792\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she is also an artist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Everyone has different hidden capacity,&#8221; Dr Yoon said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with black hair stands with her arms around her teenage daughter, both stand in front of colourful art.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/dae2284fc25616a248445f73ab64ed71\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jung Yoon with her daughter, artist Joanne Lee. (Supplied: Jung Yoon)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Yoon said she recently worked with the hospitality industry, and they were &#8220;looking for more diversity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The spectrum of customers they are serving is diverse, so they want \u2026 a diverse team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The other thing is they have \u2026 entry-level skill training, which quite easily can be customised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There is that root support from the disability support providers as well, to get to that point [of being qualified].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Yoon said it was about &#8220;shifting your perspective&#8221; from hiring people with disabilities to making workplaces more inclusive and accessible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What we found is missing is the employers&#8217; willingness,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We often think disability or diversity is not my problem, &#8216;I&#8217;m not diverse&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s no people [who] are non-diverse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Hillier said many people with disabilities had untapped potential.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[I feel] disappointed, people with disabilities need to be recognised, they can do more than what people can think,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Give them a go, you&#8217;ll be amazed what people with disabilities can do.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"James Hillier has been trolley collecting for 14 years.
