Just Eat has been forced to apologise after hungry shoppers unearthed AI-generated snaps of food items on the platform.<\/p>\n

The delivery service had been testing out tech that it hoped would generate images of food that weren\u2019t pictured on its platform yet.<\/p>\n

However, this had some pretty bizarre results.<\/p>\n

Rather than accurately depict the food, the rogue AI tool came up with a number of crazy-looking dishes.<\/p>\n

These included \u2018jalape\u00f1o cheese\u2019 \u2013 a block of cheese with entire slices of jalape\u00f1o in it; a \u2018ham and cheese wrap\u2019 which contained cubes of raw ham and cheese in an untoasted tortilla; and \u2018bacon and egg\u2019 which, inexplicably, came in a glass of beer.<\/p>\n

Images of the unusual eats have circulated on social media<\/a>, causing uproar.<\/p>\n

Of a picture of a literal jacket potato \u2013 a jacket covered in images of potatoes \u2013 one Instagram<\/a> user wrote: \u2018That potato jacket looks absolutely delicious.\u2019<\/p>\n

Another added: \u2018I don\u2019t understand. Who wants AI images of a restaurant\u2019s food even if they looked closer to what the dish should be?<\/p>\n

\u2018I want to see what the dish actually looks like as it helps me decide who to order from or what to order; plus these \u201cperfect\u201d AI versions just lead to disappointment if that\u2019s what you think your meal will look like.\u2019<\/p>\n

But perfect these images are not. A third user wrote: \u2018A place local to me has a burger labelled \u201cjust cheese\u201d and the pic is a slice of cheese on a plate.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018This is hilarious,\u2019 someone else chimed in. \u2018Our local chippy had pictures of scallops (the crustacean variety) for scallops (the sliced potato variety). I thought that can\u2019t be right for a chippy in the scrag end of Liverpool.\u2019<\/p>\n

All AI-generated images on the delivery app have a label marking them out.<\/p>\n

A Just Eat spokesperson said the company was \u2018in the process of removing\u2019 the images and would stop creating more until they had developed their AI system sufficiently.<\/p>\n

They said: \u2018We want partners on our platform to show photos that accurately reflect their dishes so that our customers can be confident in what they are ordering and happy when their food arrives.<\/p>\n

\u2018We work<\/a> with tens of thousands of small restaurants on their food imagery, including funding professional local photographers.<\/p>\n

\u2018We\u2019ve been trialling AI-enhanced images, which are clearly labelled as such, and as with any new technology, it isn\u2019t always quite right the first time.<\/p>\n

\u2018We\u2019re in the process of removing any inaccurate images that have been posted, and have paused rolling this out while we further develop the tool to ensure it best serves our partners and customers.<\/p>\n

\u2018The number of inaccurate images is incredibly small, though we are aware of many examples now circulating on social media which were not developed by our tool.\u2019<\/p>\n
