Following scenes of looting and vandalism in several French cities, from Lyon to\u00a0Limoges<\/a>\u00a0, on the sidelines of last weekend\u2019s protests over the cost of living and in support of high school students, there is considerable apprehension on the eve of new demonstrations planned for this Saturday, 24 October. Curfews and bans on demonstrations are multiplying throughout France. In\u00a0Paris, a march, the route of which has been approved by the police prefecture, will depart from the Place de la Bastille and proceed to the Place de la Nation. The government, overwhelmed by the violence of 17 October and heavily criticised since, has announced a reinforced security deployment.<\/p>\n

In this highly tense context, shopkeepers are not the only ones to \u201cclose their doors\u201d, or even barricade themselves in. Following the announcement of the early closure of the 2026 edition of the\u00a0Art Basel Paris<\/a>\u00a0fair at the Grand Palais starting this Friday evening, several museums will remain closed this Saturday during the protests, for fear of further unrest.<\/p>\n

The ministry of culture has announced the exceptional closure, as a security measure, of the Mus\u00e9e du Louvre, the Mus\u00e9e d’Orsay and the Orangerie, and the Picasso National Museum in Paris. In coordination with the Paris Police Prefecture, the ministry\u00a0\u201chas asked all institutions under its supervision to implement all necessary measures to ensure the safety of visitors, the protection of staff, and the preservation of artworks,\u201d\u00a0according to a press release.<\/p>\n

On the Paris Mus\u00e9es side, the Carnavalet Museum, the Maison de Victor Hugo, the Cognacq-Jay Museum and the Petit Palais will be closed.<\/p>\n

The Louis Vuitton Foundation, currently exhibiting the Gustave Fayet collection, has also announced its precautionary closure, as have the Bourse de Commerce \u2013 Pinault Collection and the Cartier Foundation (all weekend). Many Parisian galleries will do the same this Saturday, including Poggi, Christian Berst \u2013 Art Brut,\u00a0Magnin-A<\/a>\u00a0, Gagosian, and Hauser & Wirth.<\/p>\n

Museums and cultural venues in the region are also taking precautions. It is advisable to check before visiting.<\/p>\n
