The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the safer choice for anyone who needs a camera phone now, and especially for video, because Apple’s ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and in-app camera controls are confirmed features and the phone’s battery and sustained performance have been measured by independent labs. The Motorola Signature 27 is worth waiting for only if you are open to Android and want more telephoto reach than the iPhone’s 4x lens, and even then its 200MP periscope is a spec advantage until reviewers publish samples. Neither phone can be called the better value yet, since Motorola has not announced a price.

This comparison is for iPhone owners tempted by Motorola’s return to the premium market and for Android buyers deciding between a newcomer and the default choice. Motorola unveiled the Signature 27 at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit on September 22, and its US website promises more details “coming this November”, which matters because the first Signature never went on sale in North America. Motorola’s Nicole Hagen said in an Android Central interview that the company heard from disappointed buyers there, some of whom imported the original anyway.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max’s headline camera change is a main sensor that can shift between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4, according to Apple’s specifications, and Memeburn covered how Apple got there in its iPhone 18 Pro variable aperture preview. GSMArena’s camera tests found the daylight sharpness differences between apertures small in the scenes they shot, and noted that stopping down to f/4 in dim light pushes ISO higher, so they judged the practical benefit limited even though the idea is sound.

The more useful gain may be control rather than optics, since PhoneArena’s Rad Slavov valued being able to set aperture, shutter speed, white balance and focus inside Apple’s own Camera app, according to his review. That matters to people who like to intervene in a shot, while someone who shoots on auto may never touch it.

The Signature 27 deserves the same scrutiny, because Motorola pairs a 50MP Sony LYTIA 910 main sensor with a 200MP periscope and 3.5° of optical stabilisation, according to Motorola’s announcement, but the zoom level of that periscope is not stated and no samples exist, so the real question is at what distance and in what light those extra pixels turn into visible detail beyond the iPhone’s 48MP 4x telephoto.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the clear pick for video work on current evidence, because Apple lists ProRes, ProRes RAW through compatible apps, Apple Log 2, ACES colour management and genlock with compatible equipment, although 4K120 ProRes requires recording to an external drive, and even with that limit editors and small production teams have a toolkit they can plan around today.

Motorola has described a Video Enhancement Engine that adjusts colour with AI before and during recording, Qualcomm-assisted stabilisation and Gemini Omni for generating video, but it has not detailed codecs, log profiles or frame-rate limits for the Signature 27. That makes Motorola’s video pitch closer to automatic help for casual shooters than a professional toolkit, at least until full specifications arrive.

Does the iPhone’s Heavier Body Buy Enough Battery and Speed?

The iPhone 18 Pro Max weighs 249g, only 5g less than the foldable iPhone Duo, as Memeburn noted in its iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison, and Slavov counted the weight as the main trade-off. In return, GSMArena gave the nano-SIM model, with its 5,391mAh battery, a 19:20h Active Use Score, and Tom’s Guide’s web-browsing test recorded 18:27, a 33-minute gain over the iPhone 17 Pro Max and ahead of the 16:40 the Galaxy S26 Ultra managed in the same test. Charging reached 50% in 15 minutes and 81% in 30 minutes in GSMArena’s test, showing 100% after 55 minutes while still trickling until about 73 minutes.

Performance is also on record, with the iPhone scoring 4,047 single-core and 11,648 multi-core in PhoneArena’s Geekbench 7 test, and GSMArena found the CPU still at 84% of its peak after 30 minutes of sustained load while the GPU held 57%. Motorola’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and its ArcticMesh cooler, which Motorola says is 40% larger than the previous generation’s, are aimed at exactly this kind of test, yet neither benchmark nor battery figures exist for the Signature 27, and its weight is unknown, so there is no basis for calling it lighter or longer-lasting.

What Changes If You Switch Platforms?

The iPhone’s AI features depend on where you live, since Apple says the new Siri starts in English and is not initially available in the EU, and some server-based features have daily limits, with expanded access possibly charged for in future, according to Apple’s support notes. Motorola leans on Google’s Gemini instead, including Lyria for music generation, but language and regional availability for those features on the Signature 27 are not yet confirmed, so buyers should compare what works in their own market rather than global feature lists.

Zoom Is the Only Spec That Could Pull an iPhone Owner Away

For most iPhone 18 Pro Max owners, switching to the Signature 27 would mean giving up a proven video workflow and Apple-only pieces such as an Apple Watch, which does not work with Android phones, so Memeburn’s judgement is that a faster chip or Bang & Olufsen tuning is unlikely to tip the decision. Zoom is different, because resolution decides how far you can crop before detail falls apart. Memeburn’s arithmetic shows why: cropping a sensor to double the zoom keeps a quarter of its pixels, so a 200MP periscope cropped 2x still leaves about 50MP, while the iPhone’s 48MP 4x telephoto cropped to reach 8x leaves about 12MP, which is why Apple calls 8x optical-quality rather than optical. Pixel count is not image quality, since sensor size and processing matter as much, but if Motorola confirms a periscope of around 5x or longer, iPhone owners who shoot concerts, sport or wildlife will have a real reason to wait for samples, and everyone else has little reason to leave.

Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max or the Signature 27?Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max ifChoose the Motorola Signature 27 ifYou shoot ProRes, Log or multi-camera videoYou want to try an Android flagship that is not a SamsungYou want manual camera controls built into the default appYou want a 200MP periscope and can wait for samplesYou need to buy now at a known $1,299 starting priceYou want a written promise of seven OS upgradesYou want tested battery life, such as GSMArena’s 19:20h scoreYou care about Bang & Olufsen audio tuning

For buyers staying with Apple but unsure the Pro Max is the right model, Memeburn’s ranking of every iPhone you can buy covers the cheaper options, and the Signature 27 has also been compared with the Galaxy S26 Ultra, the OPPO Find X10 Pro Max and the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max.
