I always arrive at movie screenings exactly 20 minutes late. At this point, my local cinema will still let me in, but I\u2019ll have missed the endless adverts and trailers \u2013 apparently, I\u2019m quite lucky, as these can run<\/a> for 45 minutes in other venues. <\/p>\n

But on a recent trip to see the new adaptation Sense And Sensibility<\/a>, I began wondering how we got such different terms for the two (ads and trailers, I mean).<\/p>\n

Is it to do with the trailers actors sometimes live in while filming? The \u201ctrail\u201d of previewed information and scenes that\u2019s meant to lead you to a ticket booth?<\/p>\n

As it turns out, it has to do with when trailers used to be played in cinemas \u2013 and modern theatres could take a couple of notes. <\/p>\n

Many consider the <\/a>first trailer to have been shown in 1913, which was a filmed promo for the stage musical The Pleasure Seekers. It was considered so radical that the newspaper The Nebraska Star called this<\/a> \u201can entirely new and unique stunt\u201d.<\/p>\n

A year later, Nils Granlund, the brains behind this \u201cstunt\u201d, aired what was arguably the<\/a> first movie trailer, which was made up of slides from Charlie Chaplin\u2019s next flick. <\/p>\n

But not everyone agrees<\/a> this technique was as \u201cnew\u201d as contemporary records suggest. In 1898, French filmmaker<\/a> Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s projected slide shows from his work outside Paris\u2019 Theatre Robert-Houdin. <\/p>\n

Whatever their exact origin, by 1919, the National Screen Service was formed. This group \u201cheld a virtual monopoly on the trailer game until the 1960\u201d, per the<\/a> University of Michigan\u2019s Michigan Quarterly Review.<\/p>\n

This is where the history of the word \u201ctrailer\u201d really comes into play. Until about the late \u201930s,<\/a> most of these previews were shown after the movie, and not before it.<\/p>\n

In other words, they \u201ctrailed\u201d the main event. I am, needless to say, very annoyed we discontinued this practice.<\/p>\n

Originally, theatre owners thought that audiences would stick around long enough to watch these grabby shots \u2013 not least because a lot of films were serialised <\/a>in the early days of cinema, and ended in cliffhangers.<\/p>\n

This seems to have worked for a bit. But decades on, and with a decline in serialised movies, viewers did what we do now: walk out. So, companies placed trailers before<\/a> the films instead.<\/p>\n

Of course, Marvel<\/a> fans will probably have winced at the suggestion that modern audiences exit second the credits roll. Lovers of the franchise will know that teasers are usually placed long after watchers of other films would have left their seats.<\/p>\n

These, however, are not called \u201ctrailers\u201d. They sometimes go by<\/a> \u201cstings\u201d or \u201cafter-credits scenes\u201d (and they come alongside the usual, ahead-of-movie type of trailers, too).<\/p>\n

Guardians Of The Galaxy<\/a> director James Gunn told Radio Times<\/a>: \u201cI would probably never consider not having a post-credits scene… I think it shows the audience that you love them, giving them something extra that you don\u2019t need to give them\u201d.<\/p>\n

Accidentally or otherwise, it harkens back to the original movie \u201ctrailers\u201d too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I always arrive at movie screenings exactly 20 minutes late.
