{"id":815985,"date":"2026-10-28T00:38:09","date_gmt":"2026-10-28T00:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/815985\/"},"modified":"2026-10-28T00:38:09","modified_gmt":"2026-10-28T00:38:09","slug":"oscar-de-la-hoya-sums-up-floyd-mayweathers-chances-of-beating-ryan-garcia-in-comeback-at-49","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/815985\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar De La Hoya sums up Floyd Mayweather&#8217;s chances of beating Ryan Garcia in comeback at 49"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ryan Garcia\u2019s promoter and former Floyd Mayweather opponent Oscar De La Hoya believes the pair could deliver \u201can interesting fight\u201d if early reports turn into something concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Following initial rumours, Garcia has announced that he and Mayweather have \u2018agreed\u2019 to compete for his WBC welterweight world title.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/news\/ryan-garcia-floyd-mayweather-update\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The 28-year-old world champion\u2019s lawyer and advisor, Guadalupe Valencia, has confirmed talks<\/a>, but said that it can only take place once Mayweather is free from other fight obligations, namely a rematch with Manny Pacquiao and exhibition with Mike Tyson.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia\u2019s promoter, De La Hoya \u2013 who lost to Mayweather 2007 by split decision \u2013 told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nKT_FCMr52c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FightHype<\/a> that he found out about the potential fight at the same time fans did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It was a] surprise to me. Just like everyone else, I saw it on the internet. That would be interesting, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayweather held the WBC welterweight world title on two occasions during his iconic career, the second reign ending back in 2015. Garcia picked it up earlier this year, beating Mario Barrios, before marking his first defence with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news10.com\/sports\/ap-ryan-garcia-impressively-defends-wbc-welterweight-title-with-2nd-round-tko-of-conor-benn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a second-round stoppage of Conor Benn.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the younger man\u2019s form \u2013 and clear advantages in physicality and activity \u2013 De La Hoya believes it is a 50\/50 fight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The 21-year age difference] is big. But you have to respect what he\u2019s done in his career. He still takes care of himself \u2013 doesn\u2019t drink, doesn\u2019t smoke, doesn\u2019t do drugs, whatever.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s almost like a 50\/50 fight to me, because Mayweather has the savviness, the IQ, to just play with Ryan if he wanted to. So, it\u2019s a very interesting fight. Ryan is all over the map.
