From November, households will be able to recycle soft plastics including carrier bags, bread bags, crisp packets and multipack wrapping from home.

The scheme will start with around 10,000 homes before expanding across the city by 2027.

Councillor Yvonne Forsey, cabinet member for recycling, waste, and climate change, said: “People in Newport already take recycling responsibilities seriously, and we know lots of them want to go further and recycle their soft plastics at the kerbside too.

“I’m therefore very pleased that we’ll be launching our new soft plastic kerbside collections service next month.

“The new service will make it easier for all of us to recycle things like crisp packets, carrier bags, plastic wrapping and cereal box liners to name a few.

“Every item recycled will help make Newport and our planet a cleaner, healthier place to live, and we know residents will play their part like they always do.”

Newport residents recycle more than 71 per cent of their waste, putting the city among the UK’s top performers.

But plastic bags and wrapping still make up around eight per cent of waste in the city’s rubbish bins.

The service will turn these items into new products such as reusable shopping bags and bin bags.

Homes in the first rollout will receive clear sacks and a leaflet explaining how to use the service from their next recycling day.

Anyone who does not receive the sacks and leaflet is not yet included and should keep taking soft plastics to existing recycling points.

A council spokesperson said: “If you haven’t received a roll of sacks and our information leaflet about the new service, that means we haven’t rolled it out to your home yet.

“Until we start collecting plastic bags and wrapping from your home in 2027, please continue taking your plastic bags and wrapping to recycling collection points.”

The council has a dedicated soft-plastics collection page on its website.

From March 2027, producers will be responsible for covering councils’ costs of providing soft plastic recycling services.

From November, households will be able to recycle soft plastics including carrier bags, bread bags, crisp packets and…

[22
1397,90,56,54,55
post-816717","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
