The soon-to-be legendary songwriter and producer was, after all, barely into adulthood himself, creating the unimaginable masterpiece album Pet Sounds at the ripe old age of just 23.

To be fair to the stripey-shirted surf-pop star, his actual childhood was cut rather short. In a tale that is depressingly common, the young songwriter was pushed into the music industry at a young age by an overbearing father, Murry Wilson, who made the early part of The Beach Boys’ career a near-constant misery. Once Brian Wilson and the gang had broken free from his restrictions, though, the freedom they embraced inevitably saw them hark back to their true childhoods.

Pet Sounds, for instance, is awash with connections to Wilson’s upbringing and experiences, but the masterful micro-orchestra he struck upon with ‘Good Vibrations’ in the wake of that 1966 album was directly rooted in an old wives’ tale drilled into his infant mind by his mother, Audree Wilson.

At some point during the life of the young Wilson, his mother told him that dogs – perhaps due to their ultrasonic hearing – can pick up on feelings, atmosphere, and (most crucially for our tale) vibrations that are imperceptible to us mere humans. “I didn’t really understand too much of what it meant when I was just a boy. It scared me, the word ‘vibrations,’” Wilson once recalled, per Keith Badman’s 2004 book, The Beach Boys.

“She told me about dogs that would bark at people and then not bark at others, that a dog would pick up vibrations from these people that you can’t see but you can feel,” he added. Clearly, that almost supernatural theme stuck in Wilson’s mind throughout his childhood and into his adulthood, too. It doesn’t take a devoted Beach Boys fan, after all, to make the connection between that anecdote and the band’s masterpiece single ‘Good Vibrations’.

Although the canine origins of the track aren’t overtly referenced in the song itself – unless, of course, the entire track is sung from the perspective of a dog – it certainly falls in line with the kind of material Wilson was creating around the time of Pet Sounds.

Let us not forget, after all, the presence of barking dogs on that album, nor the fact that it is quite literally titled Pet Sounds, and included recordings of Wilson’s own pet dogs.

Further reading: From The Vault

A more skilled psychologist than is currently available within this article may be able to draw some profound parallels between Brian Wilson’s childhood memories and the creative genius he struck upon with ‘Good Vibrations’ in 1966. Perhaps, for instance, the song was a means of harking back to happier times, before the pressure and scrutiny of fame entered the songwriter’s life; perhaps he was subtly referring to the bad vibrations given off by his father during the borderline abusive early days of The Beach Boys’ tenure.

Alternatively, perhaps his mother’s tale simply popped into his head, apropos of nothing, while Wilson was constructing the pop revolution of Pet Sounds. Regardless, ‘Good Vibrations’ remains one of the greatest pop songs ever put to tape, and most likely the greatest song ever to be inspired by a pet dog.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

Credit: Far Out / Alamy October 28th, 2026 · 11:00pm GMT It is no surprise that Brian Wilson…

[28
186263,29764,96,128,131986,15745,56,54,55
post-817195","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-music","tag-186263","tag-brian-wilson","tag-entertainment","tag-music","tag-pet-sounds","tag-the-beach-boys","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
