Back in January, EA outlined a roadmap that included Project Rene, spinoff projects, and ongoing support for The Sims 4. Ten months later, Project Rene has been “paused”; rumours point to a major rework of Project X under a new name, and The Sims 4 remains the only active release receiving regular content. With EA now operating under new ownership following the buyout, the future of the series appears to be in flux.

January 2026 roadmap for The Sims Franchise. The End of Project Rene

When EA unveiled Project Rene on October 18th 2022, the company presented it as the next major step for The Sims franchise. Early demonstrations focused on collaborative building tools and cross-device play. It also noticeably had a heavy focus on online integration, following the industry-wide trend of moving towards live service models, as opposed to traditional single-player experiences.

For years, Project Rene was at the centre of The Sims franchise’s future. The project received developer updates, limited testing periods, and references in official roadmaps, even as the company repeatedly stated that it would exist alongside The Sims 4 rather than replace it.

 Project Rene tester screenshot

That changed on October 21st 2026, when project Rene was officially paused. The decision brought an end to a development effort that had lasted four years and left many questions about the next mainline Sims experience.

The cancellation also removed one of the last remaining items from Maxis’ January 2026 roadmap. Several projects announced, or referenced earlier in the year, have either launched, disappeared from public discussion, or undergone significant change since then.

From Project X To Project Evergreen

When Project Rene dominated he official announcement, rumours of another Sims project had circulated behind the scenes for much of that past year.

We first reported on Project X rumours on November 17th 2025. Unlike Rene, the project was said to be focused on the traditional single-player experience rather than online multiplayer systems.

The Verge | EA is shutting down BioWare

Following major changes and studio closures at EA, attention has now shifted almost entirely towards Evergreen. Recent reports suggest Project X remains in development but has undergone substantial changes. The project is now officially known as Project Evergreen.

The latest announcement tells us that Evergreen has become the team’s long-term focus. However, reports suggest that the project is being heavily reworked, making it difficult to predict when players might see an official announcement or learn more about its direction.

 Maxis layoffs in October 2026

The new name itself reflects how much the Sims franchise’s plans have evolved over the past year. At the start of 2026, Project Rene appeared to be the clear future of The Sims franchise. By October, Project Evergreen appears to have taken that position instead.

Other Cancelled ProjectsMySims’ Uncertain Future

EA revealed plans to expand the MySims series beyond the initial rereleases, and several rumoured projects surfaced over the following months. However, EA hasn’t announced any new MySims titles since, as attention has moved elsewhere while EA restructured its franchise plans.

 The Sims Project Stories

Originally announced in 2024, The Sims Project Stories later evolved into The Sims Town Stories during development. The mobile spinoff underwent testing and received periodic updates before reports emerged that EA had cancelled the project in 2026, ending another attempt to expand the franchise beyond its main releases.

The Sims Mobile (Discontinued)

The Sims Mobile reached the end of its run in 2025 when EA announced the game’s discontinuation. The title was removed from app stores before its servers eventually shut down in January 2026, bringing an end to one of the franchise’s longest-running mobile games.

The Sims 4 Carries On The Sims 4 Royalty & Legacy Expansion Pack

The Sims 4 remains the only Sims title receiving regular content releases, and most of those releases are down to brand deals and content creators. The last Expansion Pack reported was released in February 2026 with Royalty & Legacy. Since then, EA has focused on smaller releases, including Kits and creator-made Maker Packs distributed through The Sims 4 Marketplace. While these releases have kept new items flowing into the game, they have also confirmed a shift away from the large expansion model that defined The Sims 4’s life cycle since launch.

That approach may not be permanent. According to current rumours surrounding Project Evergreen, the Sims team could return to developing either a Game Pack or Expansion Pack for The Sims 4 as part of an effort to maintain revenue while work on the Sims franchise’s next major title continues.

 The Sims 4 Marketplace

For now, The Sims franchise finds itself in a position it hasn’t been in before. Project Rene paused, Project Evergreen under heavy reworks, and The Sims 4 continuing to receive support and content more than a decade out from its launch in 2014. The roadmap at the start of 2026 looked somewhat clear, and we were perhaps naive to accept it as fact, but many things have since changed for EA. Who truly knows what will be next? Perhaps this article will become redundant in 3 months’ time when plans inevitably shift once more for The Sims franchise.

What do you hope is next for The Sims franchise?
