Although rumored to be playing the new James Bond, Jack Lowden would actually be the perfect choice for a long-teased superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who could rival Captain America. Best known for playing disgraced MI5 agent River Cartwright in Apple TV’s Slow Horses, alongside roles in Mary Queen of Scots, Dunkirk, Wolf Hall, and more, Jack Lowden has become one of the UK’s most celebrated actors, which has made him a front-runner for one of the most coveted British characters ever.

Jack Lowden has been at the forefront of speculation about who will take over from Daniel Craig as the new James Bond in Denis Villeneuve and Amazon MGM’s upcoming reboot. While his previous roles have proven he’d be fantastic as 007, there could be another iconic British character waiting for Jack Lowden. For several years, Brian Braddock’s Captain Britain has been teased to be joining the live-action MCU, and Jack Lowden may be uniquely equipped to bring him to life.

Jack Lowden Would Be Perfect As the MCU’s Captain Britain

Having mastered the perfect blend of dramatic intensity, emotional weight, dry wit, and a commanding screen presence, Jack Lowden would no doubt excel as Brian Braddock, the British superhero known as Captain Britain, in the MCU. While some have imagined Captain Britain as a Superman archetype for the MCU, the character is actually much more complex, grounded, conflicted, and distinctively British, making Lowden uniquely suited to capture the specific multi-layered energy required to bring the Marvel Comics hero to life.

Brian Braddock first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1976’s Captain Britain #1, where he was introduced as the primary hero of the comics’ Marvel UK imprint. Braddock was raised in a small Essex town before being educated in Edinburgh, Scotland, which is strikingly similar to the early life of Jack Lowden himself. Born in Essex to Scottish parents and later being educated in Edinburgh, Lowden’s own heritage perfectly matches Braddock’s, which makes him the perfect actor to adapt this story into the MCU.

Following a near-fatal motorcycle crash, Brian Braddock was met by Merlyn and his daughter, the Omniversal Guardian Roma, who offered him the choice between the Amulet of Right or the Sword of Might. Choosing the Amulet as he didn’t see himself as a warrior, Braddock was transformed into the superpowered Captain Britain, Earth 616’s representative of the multiversal Captain Britain Corps, a large interdimensional force of mystical protectors, the members of which are imbued with superhuman abilities.

Braddock assumes a huge amount of responsibility and pressure when taking on this role, which Jack Lowden has already proven he could embody perfectly. In Slow Horses, Lowden has mastered the art of playing a highly competent, deeply earnest individual who is simultaneously frustrated, out of his depth, and desperate to prove himself. This exact energy can be channeled into Brian Braddock, who struggles with the heavy psychological burden of being chosen to become Captain Britain to protect the entire Omniverse.

Captain Britain Has Already Been Teased in the MCU

There has been no official confirmation of Brian Braddock appearing in the MCU, but the character has already been mentioned, which means his actual live-action debut could be on the cards. When Steve Rogers and Tony Stark travel back to Camp Lehigh in 1970 in Avengers: Endgame, Rogers almost comes face-to-face with then-Director of SHIELD Peggy Carter, his lost love. While almost indiscernible, Carter mentions an agent by the name of Braddock, whose unit was being impeded by mysterious lightning strikes.

Viewers widely interpreted this as a direct nod to Brian Braddock or perhaps his father, James Braddock, who was revealed later in Marvel Comics that he was in fact from Otherworld and had been sent to Earth-616 to father a hero even stronger than him. This, combined with Marvel boss Kevin Feige’s repeated acknowledgments that there have been discussions about bringing Captain Britain into the MCU, means a strong foundation has already been laid, and some of the MCU’s newer projects have reinforced this.

In more recent years, Marvel Studios has been exploring characters living in the United Kingdom just as prominently as those in the United States. Thor: The Dark World brought the Dark Elves to Greenwich, Killmonger took vibranium from the Museum of Great Britain in Black Panther, Doctor Strange fought Kaecilius in the London Sanctum, and Wanda Maximoff and Vision hid in Scotland in Avengers: Infinity War, but the MCU’s Multiverse Saga has had a much greater focus on the United Kingdom.

Spider-Man: Far From Home, Eternals, Moon Knight, Secret Invasion, and even some of the more recent VisionQuest have explored the United Kingdom, laying strong foundations for Captain Britain’s debut as the nation’s premier superhero. Braddock becomes a member of the British superhero organization MI-13 in Marvel Comics, which could be about to make its debut in the MCU, perhaps with Sonya Falsworth in the director’s chair with the likes of G’iah, Sersi, Dane Whitman, and even Steven Grant’s Mr. Knight in tow.

When Could Jack Lowden Debut As Captain Britain in the MCU?

Sure, Brian Braddock’s Captain Britain hasn’t yet been officially confirmed for the MCU, but the foundations have been laid for him to make his debut seamlessly, and Jack Lowden would be an inspired casting choice. Many fans have gravitated to monolithic action stars such as Henry Cavill and Tom Hopper for the role, but what makes Braddock special is that he’s an everyman transformed into a superhero. Lowden fits the brief physically—even down to his blond hair—and has raw emotional and dramatic talent.

As a member of the multiversal Captain Britain Corps, it would have been wonderful to see Brian Braddock make his MCU debut in the Multiverse Saga. With only a year left of this chapter of the MCU, however, it seems this won’t be happening. Of course, there’s a possibility Brian Braddock will appear in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, but this seems unlikely, and the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 is already saturated with exciting returning heroes, leaving no room for Captain Britain.

Recently, however, Amit Cohen and Ron Leshem were announced to be penning a new spy thriller series for Marvel Television, Zodiac, which is scheduled to hit Disney+ in 2028. This series could become a pseudo-sequel to Secret Invasion, which could bring the MCU back to the United Kingdom and finally introduce MI-13 and Brian Braddock’s Captain Britain. It would be fantastic to see an honest-to-goodness British superhero in the MCU, and Jack Lowden’s notoriety makes him the perfect man for the job.
