Michael Douglas<\/a> has provided a rare update on Jack Nicholson<\/a>, who has retreated from the public eye in recent years.<\/p>\n While appearing at an event in Swansea where he discussed his explosive new memoir, Douglas was asked about his relationship with Nicholson, who starred in the Douglas-produced classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest in 1975.<\/p>\n \u201cI would have liked to have acted with Jack,\u201d Douglas said. \u201cHe\u2019s not working any more. He\u2019s well. He has disappeared. I know that.\u201d<\/p>\n Douglas continued: \u201cI still see him, but he is fine. He is up there by his house and walking around in his slippers. It happens. He deserves it. I understand. He is a few years older than me, but I understand.\u201d<\/p>\n Nicholson, 89, has never officially announced his retirement, but he has not acted since 2010\u2019s How Do You Know, and has rarely been photographed since then either.<\/p>\n In April, Nicholson\u2019s daughter Lorraine shared a rare photo of the Hollywood titan<\/a>. Nicholson could be seen smiling away as he spent the day with family and friends, including singer Joni Mitchell.<\/p>\n One person commented on Lorraine\u2019s Instagram post with an effusive remark about Nicholson\u2019s brief return to the spotlight.<\/p>\n \u201cI appreciate the family sharing their Jack with all of us,\u201d the commenter wrote. \u201cThere\u2019s a world of fans who\u2019ve been entertained and touched by his art and it\u2019s just effing cool to see him hanging with a fellow genius LA artist, Joni Mitchell. We cherish our great artists and wish them joyful days!\u201d<\/p>\n Lorraine previously spoke about her relationship with her father in a 2011 interview with Us Weekly, where she talked about his role in her own acting career. \u201cHe\u2019s my mentor,\u201d she explained. \u201cI\u2019m going into the family business because we\u2019re so close and he\u2019s such an inspiration. I admire him so much.\u201d<\/p>\n For The Independent last year, film critic Geoffrey Macnab wrote about Jack\u2019s \u201cdeserved (if unofficial) retirement\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThere was a time when the actor was spotted everywhere: in nightclubs, on chat shows, at basketball matches, at movie premieres. No more,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe actor has performed a vanishing act \u2026 One of his friends, music producer Lou Adler, told the WTF podcast that Nicholson now prefers to spend his time \u2018sitting under a tree and reading a book\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n In 2024, the actor Carol Kane \u2013 who starred alongside Nicholson in 1971\u2019s Carnal Knowledge and 1973\u2019s The Last Detail \u2013 told The Independent that they remain in touch<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cNot a lot, but we keep at it,\u201d she explained. \u201cI make sure to check in on him, and thank goodness he\u2019s still answering my calls.\u201d Asked if he is doing OK, Kane said with a laugh: \u201cOh, he\u2019s still Jack.\u201d<\/p>\n A three-time Oscar winner, Nicholson is one of Hollywood history\u2019s most celebrated and recognisable movie stars, with credits including Five Easy Pieces (1970), Chinatown (1974), Batman (1989), A Few Good Men (1992) and As Good as It Gets (1997).<\/p>\n Douglas, 82, earned an Oscar for producing One Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest \u2013 which also won Nicholson his first Best Actor Academy Award \u2013 after he acquired the rights to Ken Kesey\u2019s original novel from his father Kirk, who had previously owned the rights.<\/p>\n In his memoir One Helluva Ride, Douglas wrote about his marriage to Welsh actor Catherine Zeta-Jones<\/a>, as well as his flings<\/a> with his Romancing the Stone co-star Kathleen Turner and his Basic Instinct co-star Jeanne Tripplehorn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Want to bookmark your favourite articles and stories to read or reference later?
