Streaming has absorbed a huge share of the genre since the mid-2010s, and the rare nonfiction films that have broken through theatrically have often been concert movies with built-in fanbases rather than documentaries pulling in a broad general audience. The last true crossover phenomenon was arguably Fahrenheit 9/11 back in 2004, which makes for a remarkably long dry spell in this space.

Interestingly, the film currently positioned to lead the Halloween box office isn’t a horror holdover or a superhero release. It’s a three-hour documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, and, at least for now, it also happens to hold the highest feature-film rating in Letterboxd history.

‘You Can See Everything’ Is Turning Into a Genuine Box Office Event

You Can See Everything, the Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim film that A24 kept secret for three years before springing it on the Telluride Film Festival in September, is expanding to more than 3,200 theaters in its third weekend after the studio added another 600 or so screens. With Halloween falling on a Saturday and every major distributor sitting the frame out, the field is essentially clear. The film currently holds a 4.8 out of 5 average on Letterboxd, which no feature in the platform’s history has reached.

The previous benchmark belonged to Masaki Kobayashi’s 1962 samurai classic Harakiri at 4.7, with staples like 12 Angry Men and Come and See sitting at 4.6, so Fielder and Oppenheim’s film didn’t just edge past the record; it cleared territory occupied by some of the most revered movies ever made. Letterboxd averages do drift as ratings accumulate, and a film this new will probably settle somewhat over time, but roughly 73 percent of its reviews award a full five stars, which isn’t the profile of a passing honeymoon.

The Holmes Documentary Is Set To Win Halloween Weekend

The aggregators tell the same story, with a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, a 97 on Metacritic, and a critics consensus that reads:

“Nathan Fielder’s ironclad commitment to the bit is pushed to its limit in You Can See Everything, an inscrutable Rorschach test of Elizabeth Holmes’s psyche that’s as absorbing as it is haunting.”

Holmes and her partner Billy Evans approached A24 themselves about a documentary before she reported to federal prison in 2023 for defrauding Theranos investors, and the studio handed the project to Oppenheim, the young director behind the Robert Pattinson drama Primetime, who brought in Fielder. What began as a month of filming at a San Diego rental home with Holmes, Evans, and their two children stretched into a three-year project that continued after her incarceration, with portions of their correspondence recreated by an A-list actress whose identity becomes part of the film’s design. The film grew 25 percent in its second weekend, a near-unheard-of pattern, and its $7 million production budget means A24 cleared profitability almost immediately.

The theatrical documentary has, in many ways, been treated as a fading business for much of the past…

[27
96,2839,56,54,55
post-819441","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-movies","tag-entertainment","tag-movies","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
